 Getting In Gear

1.2..3...4....5.....6......7.......8

Here are some things to remember when you shift your gears.

  • Shifting only works if you are pedaling. So keep those feet moving. Dont shift when youre stopped. You might get surprised and crash if your chain jumps gears as you start pedaling.
  • Shift pre-emptively. Dont wait until youre halfway up the hill to downshift. If you know youre going to stop, shift down. Shifting wont work when youre at a standstill.
  • Dont count! Forget the number of the gear youre in. Shift according to your cadence. Use the gears to keep yourself within the efficiency window.
  • Dont put heavy pressure on the pedals when youre shifting. The gears might not change.
  • Dont cross your chain. This means dont  shift to the smallest sprocket when youre in the smallest chainring and vice-versa. This places too much lateral strain on the chain and might damage your bike.
