Experience:
No Experience necessary. Skills learned from previous sport experience such as basketball, soccer, volleyball and track are helpful. The Sirens RFC will be glad to teach you skills needed to participate in the game of rugby.
The Game of Rugby:
The game of rugby was invented at the school of Rugby in England when a pre-soccer game player was bored and picked up the ball and began running down the field. In an attempt to stop the hooligan, his teammates chased him and tackled him to the ground,
thus creating a new game and lots of fun!
The ball, shaped much akin to a "pregnant football", is always thrown backward and therefore the rugby players are lined up like a flock of flying geese chasing the ball carrier down the fireld towards a "try" or score.
Of course, rugby would not be rugby without the traditional "rucks", "mauls" and "scrumdowns" to recycle the ball when the carrier has been stopped or tackled. A typical match of rugby will require 15 players per side on the field at once. There are no official timeouts,
no offensive vs. defensive teams, no substitutions for tired players and no yards measured for downs. After a player is tackled, the ball must be released and is free for all to acquire.
It's a great way to get into good physical shape (the halves are 40 minutes) and a great way to meet people (we travel to interesting places and interesting teams travel to us),
then there's the "third half" social to look forward to.
Players:
Members of the Sirens RFC must be a least 18 years old to participate and members are required to provide proof of adequate health insurance coverage. Most of the Sirens RFC members range from 18 to 40 years of age. There are positions for the strong, the fast, the tall and
the short, and more for those in between. It's the size of th attitude, not the size of the boot that matters most. Many cultural, ethnic, religious, and professional backgrounds are represented on this team.
Socials:
Rugby is not rugby without the "third half" social. Whatever happened on the field is either forgotten or recanted, sometimes add nauseum, over several glasses of beverages and rounds of song. And only the rudest of rugby teams would NOT attempt to host the visiting team with
plenty of food, beverage and song. All players are invited and spectators are more welcomed as social ensues.
Cost:
Sirens RFC members must pay a membership fee to belong to our national organization (United States of American Rugby Football Union), our territorial union (Western RFU), and our local union (Heart of America Union). This is paid with one payment and doesn't exceed $40 per year.
In addition, Sirens RFC dues are collected each season. The Sirens RFC participates in various fund-raisers and seeks sonations and sponsorships to defray costs of referees, tournament entry fees, travel costs, and equipment and uniform purchases.
Individual Sirens RFC
members are required to purchase personal rugby clothing such as cleats, rugby socks, rugby shorts, warm-up gear, sports bags, and mouth pieces. Rugby jerseys are purchased by the Sirens RFC.
