May 11, 2000
Five current and former McGill swimmers will battle for a spot on Canada's 2000 Olympic team from May 28th until June 4th in Montreal. Current swimmers Matthew Walker (U1 Mechanical Engineering), and David Allard (U2 Computer Science), along with graduated swimmer Carol Chiang ('97) are training hard at McGill in hopes of qualifying for Canada's Olympic team in both individual and relay events, while Alexander Pichette (U3 Electrical Engineering) is training with his club team in Montreal. Five time school record holder and McGill graduate Sebastian Paddington ('99) has already qualified for his native Trinidad's Olympic team with the Olympic B standard, and will most likely compete for Trinidad in Sydney. Sebastian will also swim at Canadian Olympic Trials for racing experience before he goes to Australia. Look for Walker in the 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyles, Allard in the 200m freestyle, 200m IM, and the 100m breastroke, Pichette in both backstrokes, and Chiang in the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyles.
