School: Virginia Tech Pick 17, Round 4 , Overall 113 Had reconstructive knee surgery after the ninth game of his senior season in high school and waited until January 1993 before enrolling at Virginia Tech. Started nine games and the Independence Bowl at free safety in '93. Second-team All-Big East safety in '94 and then moved to cornerback for the Gator Bowl. Started the first two games at cornerback in '95. Injured his knee in practice, had it scoped and came back as a backup. Started the first nine games in '96 at cornerback before suffering a groin injury. Had 44 tackles and three picks in '93, 77-1 in '94, 19-1 in '95 and 49-4 in '96, when he hardly played after his groin injury but still led a 10-win team in interceptions. Also returned nine kickoffs for 171 yards in '96. Has started at both safety and cornerback and returned kickoffs. Strong and powerful build. Can hit and tackle. A tough guy. Jumps well. Cornerback experience should help his coverage at safety. A little stiff and not very instinctive in pass coverage. May not have the cover skills to be a cornerback, and height and instincts are a concern inside. Does not have a good feel for coverage cushion. Will appear to be off balance at times. Might make it as a backup and special-team player. |
