| Qualifications |
| GENERAL PREREQUISITES: Integrity and a strong sense of responsibility. An ability and willingness to communicate conscientiously and effectively in writing and orally. An above average capacity and motivation to learn and fulfill the responsibilities of the office, in cooperation with fellow officers. A true interest and belief in the goals of the Georgia Association of Nursing Students. THE PRESIDENT The main responsibility of the President is to give leadership to the association and to serve as its spokesperson. In addition, the President presides over the Annual Convention, calls meetings of the Executive Board, and serves as a liaison between the State and the National Student Nurses Association. The President must see that the directives of the GANS House of Delegates and the Board are put into effect. In order to work effectively, the President must see that all Board members understand their responsibilities. The President must delegate responsibility, encourage broad participation of the Board members on committees and in different activities. When the President first takes office, he/she should gather information from the previous President, the state consultants, the NSNA Board and staff, and the bylaws and previous year's minutes. Priorities should be set, in collaboration with the Executive Board. In preparation for each meeting, the President should: a. Refer to minutes of the last meeting for unfinished business. b. Confer with officer and committee chairpersons for business c. Think about the most important issues confronting GANS d. Review plans with consultants. e. Prepare an agenda Specific Qualifications of the President: a. Be able to perform the duties prescribed for this office. (see GANS bylaws) b. Be able to preside as a democratic and impartial leader while providing adequate direction. c. Be able to facilitate the group process of the Board. d. Have outstanding scholastic ability, in order to be able to complete school and devote considerable time to GANS. e. Represent GANS at meetings of GNA, GLN, and other professional organizations. FIRST VICE PRESIDENT To act in the absence of the President. The Vice-President is responsible for the planning the annual state convention and travel of the Board to the NSNA convention. Planning the state convention is a BIG undertaking which includes making hotel arrangements, planning workshops and program, engaging speakers, and finding exhibitors. Specific Qualifications of the First Vice President a. Be able to perform the duties prescribed for this office (see Bylaws) b. Be able to coordinate the work of a number of people. c. Plan and coordinate programs and arrange for meetings on the state level. SECOND VICE PRESIDENT To act in the absence of the President and/or First Vice-President. The Second Vice-President is responsible for assuring that GANS operates according to its bylaws and for maintaining parliamentary procedure during the annual state convention. Specific Qualifications of the Second Vice President a. Perform the duties prescribed for this office (see Bylaws) b. Draw up and revise bylaws c. Understand effective bylaws and be able to explain them to others d. Understand the purposes and philosophy of GANS e. Have a working knowledge of parliamentary procedure SECRETARY The primary responsibility of the recording secretary is to take minutes at all meetings. Minutes are an office record of the proceedings of an organiation's meeting. They provide an impartial record of what was done. Accuracy, brevity, and clarity are important. Specific Qualifications of the Secretary a. Perform the duties prescribed for this office (see Bylaws) b. Able to keep clear and accurate records of all GANS meetings. c. Send copies of minutes to all local organizations, to members of the State Board, and to NSNA. TREASURER To receive, disburse, and keep accounts of GANS funds. The Treasurer keeps a record of all dues-paying GANS members, develops an annual budget, reports on the state of the finances at each Board meeting, keeps a list of the delegates entitles to vote at the GANS annual convention, and devises ways to increase the association's income, either through increased membership or fundraising. Specific Qualifications of the Treasurer a. Perform the duties prexcribed for this office (see bylaws) b. Be able to keep accurate account of money c. Be able to understand and interpret the budget EKG EDITOR The EKG Editor is responsible for publishing the newsletter, EKG (Exciting News for GANS). This involves searching for appropriate contributions, editing written material, laying out copy, and working with a printer to meet consistent publishing deadlines. The person should have above average writing ability and should understand basic principles of journalism. (see Bylaws). PUBLIC RELATIONS DIRECTOR This director is responsible for soliciting and obtaining exhibitors for the GANS state convention and obtaining advertisers for the EKG and website. This director will be the sole contact to outside vendors to the GANS Board. This position is also responsible for creating sending copy to NSNA, Pule, and Georgia News. (see Bylaws) LEGISLATIVE DIRECTOR This director is responsible for following state and national legislative activities related to nursing and healthcare and keeping local association abreast of developments. This person reports monthly to the Board and takes action to make the views of GANS and its membership known to the legislators. (see Bylaws) BREAKTHROUGH TO NURSING DIRECTOR This director is responsible for recruitment and retention of GANS members. This person communicates state and national BTN projects to each school. (see Bylaws) DISTRICT DIRECTOR There are four district directors that divide the responsibilites. Each director is responsible for communicating to the schools in their district all NSNA and GANS activities. Their responsibilities also include verifying Chapter Constituency Status with NSNA and working with the BTN Director to recruit new members. (see Bylaws) NOMINATING AND ELECTION COMMITTEE There are four Nominating and Election Representatives (NEC) each from the four districts of the state. The Chairman of this committee is decided on the person receiving the greatest number of votes received during election. Each committee person is responsible for recruiting persons from their district to run for office during the upcoming GANS Convention. (see Bylaws). |
