We had an interesting learning session. One of the people in the high B'nei Akiva office, a woman named Michal, decided she could abide a trip to see the revolting Hachshara members. We knew just how much she thought of us, when she started to pass out old crayons.
"OK, now, everybody draw a righteous cat." What the heck does she think of us, is the thought going through everybody's mind. Actually at the thought of the cats, and the way B'nei Akiva treated us, I was thinking about "Maus," but the cats are far from righteous in that, so I had to come up with something else to draw.
Kids, those who actually decided to abide by this assignment, are for the most part, jokingly drawing cats with black hats, so they look like religious Jews. A couple of girls thought they caught the idea of this, so they drew cats purring in their owners lap, or the like. I can't draw, so I drew a smile, and said it was the Cheshire cat, from Alice in Wonderland.
So now, we've been waiting to see if this stupid session had a bloody point, when she shows us a picture, that I think she drew with her toes, again showing the time invested in us, of a cat chasing a mouse. "This is what a righteous cat is.
"Cat's are not supposed to be in people's arms, and he certainly doesn't have to follow the bible. He's doing what his body tells him, so he's righteous" Now, at this point, we've put up with this childish lesson to teach us this "value" for a good forty-five minutes. I have taught myself not to assault the speaker, or argue with her, but this was just so necessary.
"That is highly ridiculous."
"What?"
"I mean, I'm more than aware that we don't subscribe to the notion of original sin, but surely the realization of the struggle to be moral has crossed your mind."
"I'm sorry, what?"
"If I follow my instincts, then I'm righteous?"
"No, you've got the bible for your morals, they have only their instincts."
"So, society's morals are actually bad for us to follow?"
"Sorry, I have to go..."
You know, if you want to treat us like idiots, be ready to look like one.
