United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps

United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps

"The NSCC is a nautically oriented training program for young men and women, ages 13 through 17. The NSCC allows young people to sample military life with no obligation to join any branch of the armed forces, a chance to "test drive" the Navy. Should a cadet decide to enlist in the armed forces, prior NSCC service may permit entry at an advanced pay grade. The NSCC is not a part of the Navy, rather it is a federally chartered nonprofit organization. NSCC staff participation is on a volunteer, non-paid basis.

The NSCC excels at instilling courage, patriotism, self-reliance, accountability, pride, seamanship, and other kindred virtues within cadets. The NSCC strives to provide a broad educational base to help develop each cadet into a stronger person. To this end, a combination of hands on training and classroom lecture is used to present the materials. Civilians and military personnel present the full range of civilian and military options available to them, and to help explain youth's responsible role in society. Personal improvement classes, such as Physical Training, Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Sexual Harassment Awareness, and Study Skills classes, are offered by most units on a regular basis.

Hands-on training for Sea Cadets is authorized on board ships and shore activities of the Navy and Coast Guard. Training is conducted by military personnel and by qualified NSCC officers and instructors. Examples of available NSCC training include: Recruit Training, Shipboard Training, SEAL Training, Medical Training, Aviation Ground School and Flight Training, Navy Choir and Band Training, Seabee Training, Submarine School, and Foreign Exchange programs to such locations as Bermuda, Belgium, Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and South Africa. This list is not comprehensive, many more opportunities are available through the NSCC." (www.seacadets.org)

I'm the Leading Chief Petty Officer of the Hancock Squadron of the Sea Cadets. We have drills on the third weekend of every month at an Air National Guard station in Hayward. For more information on Hancock Squadron, visit the Hancock Website.

Over Winter Break, I went down to San Luis Obispo to be a staff cadet at 1999-2000 Winter Recruit Training Command. For those who don't know what that is, it's boot camp.

Here's a picture from the boot camp, & this is the boot camp webpage.

This summer, I went on an International Sea Cadet Exchange to Hong Kong.

Here's a picture of some of the Sea Cadets from different countries who participated.

This is the website of one of the Hong Kong Sea Cadet units that sponsored the International Exchange.
