DR. STEVE FAVORS
GRAMBLING STATE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Dr. Steve Alexander Favors was named Grambling State University's sixth president by the Board of Trustees for the University of Louisiana System. The announcement was the realization of a 21-year goal set by Dr. Favors to one day head a predominately Black institution of higher education.

Dr. Favors' reign as president of GSU began on July 1, 1998. During his first day on the job, Dr. Favors was given the oath of office by Third District Judge Cynthia Woodard at a welcoming assembly in the School of Nursing auditorium. A press conference followed in the School of Nursing lobby. Activities concluded with a reception in the Washington-Johnson Complex.

A seasoned administrator who has worked at other historically and predominantly Black institutions, Dr. Favors brings a storehouse of experience, expertise and insight to the Grambling State University community.

He has spent the last 25 years in higher education, with 21 of those years at the vice presidential level. His collaborative leadership skills and ability to work with diverse constituencies have made him a much sought after administrator.

Prior to his current position. Dr. Favors had served as vice president for student affairs at Howard University in Washington, DC, since 1990. From 1994-96, he also served as Howard University's acting director of athletics.

Dr. Favors has also served as vice president for student affairs at the University of New Orleans, Dillard University in New Orleans, and Wiley College in Marshall, Texas.

Dr. Favors is a former assistant professor of education at Prairie View A & M University in Prairie View, Texas. He began his professional tenure as an eductor at his alma mater, Texas A & M University in Commerce (formely East Texas State University). Other positions he held there were student residence hall director, graduate assistant to the dean of men, assistant director for student activities, counselor and assistant to the dean of students.

At Texas A & M University, Dr. Favors earned an Ed. D. degree in 1978 and an M.S. degree in 1973 both in student personnel and guidance; and a B.S. degree in pre-law. He was also licensed in 1984 as a professional counselor by the Texas Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors.

His professional affiliations have included the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the NCAA Certification Team, the District of Columbia Chief Student Personnel Association, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the American Association of University Administrators, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the American College Personnel Association, the National Association of Personnel Workers, the Texas Association of Black Personnel Workers in Higher Education, the Texas Personnel and Guidance Association and Phi Delta Kappa.

His civic and social involvement include Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, Inc., the Barons, New Orleans Urban League, Greater Metropolitan Urban League of Washington, DC, Mt. Zion United Methodist Men's Association, NAACP, Boy Scouts of America, LeDroit Park Community Association and the Mayor of New Orleans' War on Drugs Task Force.

Dr. Favors has already garnered an impressive list of honors, awards and accolades that substantiate his commitment to advancing the cause of education, especially among Black Americans. He is listed in Who's Who in Louisiana, Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership, Men of Achievement and the Jaycees' Outstanding Young Men in America.

At 49 years of age, the Texarkana, Texas native has a well-deserved reputation for encouraging academic excellence while insisting that instutitions foster a student-oriented environment. As Grambling State University's chief administrative officer, Dr. Favors is determined to lead the university in a "collaborative commitment to excellence"; the theme he has chosen while undertaking his proactive vision for the university.

He and his wife Charlotte are the parents of two sons, Steve Jr. and Jonathan.
