The 10th Annual Norris Pig Dinner
February 19th, 2000

I am looking for scanned pictures of NPD 2000. If anyone has some to go on the page, let me know at [email protected] Thanks!
Gentleman:
I must say that was a fabulous dinner/weekend. Everyone that attended I
think will agree that it was a special time.... I don't hesitate to use the
word "epic"...
Umlas at the mic, auctioning off everything except his sister (which I think
he could be coerced into doing) was unbelievably funny. Those comments
about Mavros still have me in stitches...
then there was McPhee who thought the beers were complimentary, so he kept
grabbing handfuls for our table. The bartender was clueless...
J.W. as always was a great Master of Ceremonies.... Dougie Fresh just being
himself...
Moody writing out those flash cards for the Frank Norris speech in German.
That was ingenius . Because of that, people were rolling in laughter
throughout the whole speech. That never happens at other FIJI dinners....
the whole day was truly amazing.... It was awesome to just hang out on
Saturday afternoon at Sam's and this "Study Hall" place that somehow is able
to serve hard alcohol. Conklin definitely would not have graduated if that
place was open back in the day...
It seems like everyone is doing so well and there were such positive
feelings all over. Even though the current Actives cannot relate to this..
many of us in the beginning sweated out every detail of every "Happy Hour"
or "T.G." .... and there were all those Islanders...
The bottom line is that it is not easy to "Start" a fraternity and grow it
into something meaningful and flourishing.... We really did it though. And I
would not trade in the experience for anything. I also have realized how
awesome all of you are. There are some truly amazing and hilarious guys
that are FIJI's from Santa Barbara. That "Run Smitty Run" video was an
absolute classic. I just can't picture the Pikes making a video as creative
as that and having all the alums standing around watching... ya know what I
mean ??
My wife was a Kappa Kappa Gamma at UCSB, and her and all her Kappa Alumni
friends would not stop talking about how "funny" and "awesome" all the
FIJI's were downtown on Saturday night... I love to hear shit like that,
because in the beginning of FIJI at UCSB, nobody knew who we were. We
worked very hard to build FIJI into something... and I think we did that...
but more importantly the PROCESS of that has made me realize that the people
who shaped our house are FUCKING STUDS. I feel so lucky to have met so many
awesome people. I really appreciate all of you. (am I sounding like "Big
Daddy" at the dinner getting sentimental ?? I will refrain from referring to
myself in the 3rd person though Greg...)
And the feeling I got about the Current Actives in the house was very
positive as well. They obviously look up to Josh (the President) and it
looks as though he has provided some solid leadership. I applaud the guy. I
really liked all the guys I talked with... They are simply some cool
people..
For those of you who did not make it to the dinner...
We wish you were there. I do think you missed a special opportunity, but
come next year. It is worth the drive or flight that you have to take.
Coming this year reminded me how lucky I am to be a FIJI and maybe the same
can happen for you.
Keep in touch guys...
Shof
P.S. Dato gets my award for the guy who has not changed a bit... and for
Cook I think we need to put our heads together and submit a Top Ten Reasons
Why Aaron Should Attend Next Year's Dinner to make up for the golf list.
Read some excerpts from what everyone has been emailing about....
From Aaron Cook:
I, honestly don't know what to reply to or if any of
you guys will even read this, but as for the cost of
the event it's cheap most of the grads would drop that
on dinner for some broad they've known for fifteen
minutes and some for some hooker they've known for
less than that (Steadman). I could care less about
saving $50 to have it on a Sunday. What a ridiculous
idea. I'm pretty sure that all the guys from LA,
NorCal, and San Diego won't mind heading back home at
10 P.M. Sunday night to save $50. (Who's freakin idea
was that anyway)? I'm looking forward to seeing many
of you guys again for the event. (ON SATURDAY!!!!!)
Last years event was alright considering we were
$100,000 in debt at the time. Since we have satisfied
a portion of that lets step it up a bit and maybe Oaks
can take care of any outstanding debt we've got this
year. (I heard he carries a briefcase full of
moneyaround with him).
Lastly I'll see you guys there and I am looking for a
foursome. Not me and Bower with 2 chick either.
Let's plan on some long ball. Bower and KK: you still
got it? Hope everyone is great and if you can't
afford the price of NPD give Oaks a ring, but we all
told you that that COMM. major wasn't going to amount
to shit. J/K We all know times get tight sometimes but
I hope to see you all there

Scott,
My most heart felt apology to you and your Comm.
major. I don't know if you are aware of this, but
that was a joke. We all know that YOU of all people
will certainly amount to something (or the comm. major
will for that matter). But as a Bachelor of the Arts
in Communications I would expect a much more pithy
retort than "grade-a jack ass". I am sorry you were
so deeply offended by my comment, which again is my
fault as I am not versed in the "Art of Communication"
I may not have "communicated" the fact that I was
joking. So to all the Comm. majors out there, sorry.
Sincerely,
Aaron G. Cook

From Squatvala:
Well Cookie, I have to agree with you that the whole Sunday thing is
kind of a crock, even if it is a 3day weekend which makes sunday really
saturday and saturday really friday, (what is friday then?). As far as
going big with the casino knights is concerned, I have to admit I was
kinda looking forward to that but I think that some real QT without all
the distractions is better regardless of the cash. Most importantly, I
think we should get our fucking hands out of the pie and let the chapter
set this thing up instead of piling on and changing things at the last
minute. I would however like to nominate Dato officail NPD liason for
upcoming years. He could set up a web site with online polling and
automatic e-mail notifications of pending plans, he could then tie in
e-bay with the auction on saturday night and whoever spent the most
could get that money mathced in united miles....
who fucking cares. Let's just get wasted and stop acting like a bunch
of girls on their wedding day.
There obviously needs to be some respect and decorum for the dinner but
after that... You're an adult. make it happen.
Rich
P.S. - count me in for golf. I heard Cook was buying a foursome at
Sandpiper. He's so sweet. I have a couple extra golf balls I could
give you in return.

Brothers,
Brian brings up a good point. It appears that several of the graduate brothers
were unhappy with the NPD last year when it was held that the chapter house.
In response, the undergraduate brothers have decided to hold a big-ticket event
downtown to try and redeem themselves.
I am sure we can all agree, we don't expect crystal and dancing girls (well
except for Stedman). What we want to do is spend time together, renewing our
bonds of brotherhood and remembering the good old days (like Poonzy's bee incident
or Rich's browny experience during Islander). I would rather spend my time
at the chapter house and put extra money on improvements. A place that is clean,
respectable and demonstrates the pride the current undergraduate brothers have
in their chapter house is more import
If they re-directed their effort they could have a great looking physical plant
while showing to the grads that they got the message from last year.
I was sorry to hear that the graduate brothers who were not satisfied with the
accommodations last year did not address them directly with the chapter, much
less offer their time to work with the undergraduate NPD coordinator to make
things better this year. If we have a problem, it is our responsibility as
graduate members to help the undergraduates find a solution. It does no good
to tell them they have done a piss poor job and walk away. Get in there, dedicate
some of your time and continue to make a
I am sorry I will not be able to make it to this year's dinner, but I look forward
to hearing about the chapters recent activities and success along with updates
on graduate brothers in the Winter Inviticus. (Hint hint Ryan)
Take care brothers and remember "Phi Gamma Delta is not for College Days Alone!"
Fraternally,
Bijan

From dato:
Just to clarify.
Nothing has changed, but the venue and the price.
Same time, same date (Feb. 19th), same casino games.
So Rich you may have to spend your QT at the tables.
I have to agree about getting our hands out of the pie
and letting the undergrads take care of this. I'm not
sure about the metaphor however. I think someone has
seen American Pie a few too many times.
Later,
Dato

P.S. Conklin is coming, I talked to him last night.
He's not up to speed on this new fangled Electronic
Mail thing, so will one of you Bay Area guys give him
a call about possible car pooling? His number is
209-477-7337 or just send me your number Rich, Doug or
whoever and I'll pass it on to him. Ask him if Sage is
going to make it too.

From McMurty:
Let's stop trying to change what the undergrads have already completed. They
plan the event, we show up. See you then.

I just want to complain about everything everyone else is doing.
But seriously now. Enough wanking. Anyone have Matt Terzian's e-mail address or
phone number? I had heard he was involved in the porno business in LA somewhere...

From Rohrer:
Hibbard's idea sounds like a good one to save money and the savings could
reduce ticket cost and allow for more $$$ to be passed on to the house.
And yes, I was one of the A-holes that had derogatory comments about last
year's NPD because I did not enjoy spending 12 hours in travel time to see
the traditions of NPD trashed by undergrads that lacked the maturity to
give the event the respect it deserved. If the current Exec can control
the undergrads and make NPD fun yet also retain the decorum that this event
demands then I'm all for having it at the house and passing along the
savings to the undergrads. The dinner (if at the house) should not be some
piece meal last minute Woody's buffet - that was bullshit, & Gamma Chi's
founding fathers wouldn't have ever planned a NPD to be held that way.
Getting piss drunk, rowdy, F'ing around and regressing to our old college
ways is top of my list of things to do with you grads (it may even be time
for Green & I to brawl) but not during NPD, lets save that for downtown.

From The Shof:
whatever you guys think is fine w/me..... casino night might not be
necessary. I think everyone just wants to hang out, right ??
We aren't trying to impress dates or wives (scary, eh?) so we could have
it at the house and let the extra money go toward reducing whatever debt
there is ???
The important part is having some sports activities lined up (Golf.....
football, hoops, volleyball, etc.) and having some beers available....
what else do we need ???? (I can practically hear Stedman echoing
"Hookers dude"..... but we will ignore that)
C-ya soon.

fools! The e-mail gates are officially open....
After attending meeting last night I have a little
more insight on the situation for NPD.
The feeling of the chapter undergrads is that we, the
grads, not only didn't think that NPD should be at the
house, but that last years NPD was a disgrace to the
event. Apparently word got back to them from a few
unsatisfied grads that they basically did a piss poor
job last year. So this year they've decided to step it
up a few notches and redeem themselves. It's going to
cost us a bit, but it should be a good night and they
feel that the event will profit the house as well as
offer the grads and undergrads a great time. We may
not need the Double Tree or Casino Night, but it's
done now and I don't really think we should try and
change it all last minute.
I say at this point we should applaud them, show up in
mass numbers and have a great time.
Josh and his cabinet are really doing an amazing job
of getting the house back on it's feet financially and
putting the house back on good terms with
International, Dennis Emmery as well as the local
authorities like IFC and the University. They've even
got Emmery buying them paint and possibly new carpet.
You'll hear all about that in his state of the chapter
address.
The down side of this is that they can't afford to do
the little things like send invitations via snail
mail. Email and word of mouth is the only way grads
are going to find out about this NPD. It's up to us on
this list to make sure that every grad that we have a
phone number or an email address for, gets
invited...now! It's only a month away.
The cost is $125 they could use it as soon as
possible. Mail it in today if you can.
Thanks,
I hope to see you soon,
Dato
P.S. I've added a few names on the end of the current
list that I didn't see before please continue to do so
and forward the messages to Ryan Reposa his address is
in the list.

Personally, I think this NPD thing is gotten everyone out of their corporate, monday-to-friday 9 to 5, mentality and got them thinking about PGD again. I love it!
Its nice to know Fiji is "not for college days alone".
Can't wait to see you guys there.
