RANMA 1/2
Created by Rumiko Takahashi
Produced by Shogakukan in Japan and by Viz Communications in the US
What would you do if your father engaged you, against your will, to someone
you didn't even know? What would you do if you were a guy engaged to FOUR
(okay, three with a claim, one without) girls at the same time, all trying to win
you over the others? And, worse still, what would you do if you turned into
a girl every time you were splashed with cold water? Well, as unrealistic as
it may seem, this is case for Ranma Saotome.
Mostly his father's fault, Ranma Saotome has anything BUT a normal life. Living
on the road for most of his life, Ranma spent most of his life practising
martial arts. While training in China at the Jhusenkyou (Training Ground of Acursed Springs),
he knocked his father into Shonmaoniichuan (spring of drowned panda), where a
panda drowned 2000 years ago).
He, in turn,
took advantage of a surprised Ranma (how would you react if a panda wearing your dad's gi and glasses jumped out of a spring?) and kicked him into the
Nyanniichuan (spring of drowned girl), where a girl drowned 1500 years ago.
Hot water changes them back, but when splashed with cold water, they
transform into their cursed forms.

One month later, Genma (Ranma's father) took Ranma to the home of his
long-time friend, Soun Tendou. Years ago, they arranged the marriage of
their children to continue the Tendou training hall. They
arrived, but how would you react if a panda walked into your house carrying
a struggling girl over his shoulder? And if you found out that that the girl is
supposed to be iinazuke (fiance or fiancee) to one of your daughters? ^_^ Faint? Well, that's what Soun did...
Before Ranma arrived, Soun told his three daughters that one of them would
have to marry Ranma. His oldest daughter Kasumi, 19, didn't want to marry
someone younger than herself.
Nabiki, his 17 year-old middle daughter,
probably seemed to be the most enthusiastic at the time, but didn't really
seem to like the idea when she found out that Ranma was a *girl*. Akane,
Soun's youngest daughter, age 16, didn't like the whole idea from the
start, but took pity on and had sympathy for Ranma when everyone was complaining about
him... er... her...
Akane took Ranma to the dojou and they had a little kenpo (martial arts) match.
Ranma beat Akane, and Akane complimented Ranma on her skills. She also
told Ranma that she was glad that Ranma wasn't a boy, which stirred a bit of irony.
Later on, in the bathroom, Akane walked in on Ranma (when he was a guy) and stirred a bit of
commotion. Ranma reintroduces himself and everyone is simply stunned.
Genma explained their curses, using Ranma as a demostration, and told them
of the fateful day they visited Jhusenkyou. A father-son fight then ensued,
involving some fun with water. Soun then told Ranma that she (he) could pick any of
his three daughters. Kasumi and Nabiki immediately elected Akane to be Ranma's fiancee, since she knew
her (him) better and because she "hates boys and Ranma's only half-male." Ranma
didn't like the fact that he was engaged to an uncute, violent tomboy, insulting her, and
Akane didn't like being engaged to Ranma any better and expressed herself by
whapping her (him) on the back of the head with a table (and starting a
beautiful relationship =).
