1990s

By the 1990s almost no boys, except for the very youngest dressed up in shorts. Toddlers often have long trousered outfits.

I went from long trousers to short when I started Breakspear.

Casual Clothes
Sports clothes and designer labels are very popular.

Long baggy shorts by mid-decade became common, part of the hip-hop fashion trend, in part influenced by black basketball stars who objected to the short shorts basketball players formerly wore. "T" shirts and caps are popular, especially when emblazoned with designer labels or logos.

British boys wear football kits.
Football shorts had got longer too.

The grunge look and hip-hop styles appear. Many boys want large baggy jeans and the baggier the better. There is some disagreement over the origin of baggy jeans. Some observers seem to think people in the Hip Hop community began to copy prison trousers. Others are convinced that the baggy jean actually has some roots in the skate/snowboard industry.

Popular sportswear for boys in the 1990s are plastered with the manufacturers name, including Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica, the Gap, and others. The media is so important to modern children that it appears to be critical to proclaim your knowledge and acceptance of the latest trends. Hilfiger's street popularity was confirmed when Snoop Doggy Dogg wore a red, white, and blue Hilfiger rugby shirt on Saturday Night Live in March 1994; this, in turn, boosted his popularity among hip-hop wannabes in the suburbs.

It is rare in the 1990s to see boys with very long hair, but styles are not nearly as rigid as they once were and hair of many different length and styles are observable in the 1990s.

The spikey and outrageously colored hair of British punks has inspired a substantially modified spikey hair style worn by boys in the 1990s. Of course the hair style for boys doesn't have the bright colors and prominent spikes. But there is a clear spikey look. Perhaps even Bart Simpson had an impact here.

Towards the end of the 1990s jeans were becoming less popular and people started to wear combat and skate trousers because they thought that jeans was some thing their dads wore!!!!!!!

Scouting
Beavers wore jogging suits and the cubs wore school shorts. The scouts now wear lightweight and combat trousers instead of the traditional scout trousers.
