His father was the greatest of Heroes, saving the entire universe from subjugation time and time again! Now he must continue that tradition , his powers are the same, but his outlook is different. Narrator : Quick ! Go back and read Thor #514 then come back here.

Genis : "Okay big guy, lets take this slow. I told you my name is Genis or Captain Marvel and I've been stuck here for a month already."

Genis : "These things on our necks (points to collars they both wear) are what are keepin' us both here. These things short out our brains if we even think about escape, but our jailors don't know that I have my memory back, or at least most of it."

Gardox: "Aye, mine own is coming back in pounding waves (Gardox Holds his head) what are we to do here my friend ? Verily in truth I feel I should be leading our escape here, but with mine brain so addled mayhap thou should taketh the lead."

Genis : "You seem awfully familiar to me, but like I said most of my memory has returned, but not all."

Gardox peers out of the cell they share, then spins, both fists clenched, his eyes ablaze with fury!

Gardox : "These jailors of ours think we are helpless verily, time is our ally, soon we will strike, and then woe be unto them !"

Genis : "What I want to know is how you ended up here? Do you remember? "

Gardox : "Nay my friend, not all of it , but there are bits and pieces. I remember a great battle amidst the stars, but everything has a haze of sorts over it. I see a gargantuan foe and myself, or I think tis me at the least. And another.A-a blue skinned man-"

Genis : "A Kree ? "

Gardox: "Nay , though e'en that term is not unknown to me. He was something else, and I felt anger towards him, but also a grudging appreciation for his prowess in combat. I remember forcing this monster through a-a hole, yes, a hole in space."

Genis : "A hole? To where, here? You know we're not in normal space don't you? This is the negative zone."

Gardox: " N-no, I did not remember that, but now it doth indeed seem "right" somehow."

Genis turns away and peers out the bars.

Genis: "I wonder how everyone is back home?"

Gardox : "You remember your home ?"

Genis : "Yeah, my memory is just about complete. In fact I think I know you too. Not like we ever met or anything, but , like I know you by what you've done."

Gardox : " Hhmmm. Who am I? I must remove this infernal collar!"

Gripping it Gardox pulls savagely as suddenly like a puppet with its strings cut, Gardox drops to the ground in spasms as the neural collar does its work.

Genis : "Relax big guy, it'll stop soon."

Gardox: "Aye....friend Genis....but... soon..we will....have our...revenge !"

Cut to deep space

A freighter lies dead, its ion cells leaking plasma into the void as a large figure moves through the airless ship, tossing aside lifeless bodies as he goes. Finally the figure comes across a vault secured in a cargo bay. Without a sound he tears the door off the vault and extracts the contents, a single ring he immediately places on his index finger.

Figure : (A smile of all teeth is the only thing visible) "At last."

He turns and waves his prize to the heavens

Figure : "At last ! HAHAHAHAHAHAHahahahaha......"

Pullback shot of the dead freighter, as the echos of the laughter disappear.

Cut to Titan

Narrator : His name is Eros, but to some he's known as Starfox of the Mighty Avengers! And today he has a mission.

(Scene of Eros flying over Titans fields finally seeing what and who he 's looking for, he lands)

Eros: "Hello Elysius, how long are you going to stand there staring into that hologram of the sky above our heads?"

Elysius: "As long as it takes until my son is home with us again. He's disappeared for far to long this time Eros. As his uncle of sorts I'm a little surprised you aren't more concerned."

Eros :(with a wink and a smile) "Who's to say I'm not dear Elysius ? I just know what the boy feels, he after all takes after me in certain ways."

Elysius : "That is exactly what worries me "dear" Eros."

Eros:( Suddenly more serious) "'Lysie, C'mon. He's a big boy with the power to toss around battle cruisers like they were twigs. What kind of trouble could he possibly have gotten into?"

Elysius : " Who really knows Eros? It's a big Galaxy out there and after the mess with Yon Rogg* we faced a few months back he was on a kick to get to "know himself" better. Chronos only knows what he's up against !"

Eros: "Probably nothing. I think you're just being a nervous mother."

Elysius : "And I shouldn't be ? Let's face something here Eros, he's only three years old in reality."

Eros : "Yes, I know he's been prematurely aged to a young adult , but still even his mind was aged properly. Try not to worry Lysie, I'm sure he's having a blast whatever he's doing."

Scene of Genis being blasted across the Arena by a giant bald headed ape like creature with a six foot tail

THOOM!

Genis : "Unnghh! Now THAT hurt !"

He shakes his head to clear the cobwebs as the strange simian-like creature bounds after him. Genis leaps to his feet and kicks his foes legs out from under him with a quick right legged leg sweep , which he continues to spin on. Then, switching legs he turns it into a wheel kick with his left that knocks the staggered creature over.

The man-ape growls angrily

Man-ape: " Boy you just made a big mistake here. I woulda killed you quick-like, but not now. Now you suffer! Harraaggghh!"

The big creature throws himself at Genis-Vell in pure bruiser fashion, but suddenly Genis' face goes eerily calm, as the cosmos seems to suddenly be reflected in his eyes, and then as the Man-Ape nears the conclusion of his leap Genis strikes !

Pa-KOW!

A powerful right swung in an upward arc from Genis's hip, with all his prodigious strength behind it, it sends the Man-ape fifty feet away in one blow, unconscious before he hits the ground!

Genis : "And the names not "Boy" It's Captain Marvel, remember it Curious George."

Genis makes his way back to the pit as the crowd goes wild chanting

Crowd : "Mar-vel, Mar-Vel, Mar-Vel!"

Genis suddenly grasps his head as memories flood back to him.

Genis: (That name, spoken that way! There's some kinda significance and ....wait my ..father ? YES ! My father was the first Captain Marvel ! No, wait not Marvel, but Mar-Vell! I remember ! I remember it all now! What happened just then, me knowing when to take ape-face down, that was a cosmic awareness flash. I received it , in full measure while battling dads old foe Yon-Rog!"

Genis walks slowly down the corridor as images and memories come quickly into crystal clear focus

Genis: ( I had left Titan after giving Yon-Rog* the beating of his bizarr-o life and wandered a few of the places Dad had seen, to get to know his experiences a bit better. I saw the blue area of Earths Moon where Dad fought Uatu the Watcher, as well as hung out on Earth for a week or two with Rick Jones. I was just getting' into Kree space, to check out Hala when I had a massive Cosmic Awareness flash of worlds being sucked into this place, the Negative Zone! Using the Nega Bands I slammed 'em together and brought myself here. It turned out these toad faced guys were behind this. They were looking' to get some fresh meat in here for their games when I put the kibosh on their scheme. I destroyed their Negative Zone barrier breaker thing and got knocked out in the explosion. They must've decided to make use of me, so as to not lose to much profit here.)

Genis rounds a corner and comes upon many warriors of the game, among them is Gardox, who is looking over weaponry on a display rack.

Genis : "Gardox, c'mere a minute I gotta speak with you, hurry."

Gardox : "What is it friend Genis ?"

Genis pulls Gardox off to the side away from prying ears

In hurried tones Genis tells him everything he remembered.

Gardox's face grows tight as Genis speaks, his features set into a grim stare.

Gardox : "Aye, twould make sense, and I DO now remember your father, more clearly as the moments doth pass. Twould explain why thou art familiar to me as well."

Suddenly from behind them

Voice : "You two, head back out to the arena, your both next ."

Both turn as one as the Guards of the arena approach them, hands carry arcing stun rods.

Genis : "Uh wait a minute guys, I just finished a fight . I won see? I'm done for two days, you know the rules."

Guard one : "Not this time pipsqueak. You and the gold hair here are ordered back out again."

Gardox : "Why? To what purpose, who are we to battle?"

The second guard grins an evil grin, his three eyes winking in no apparent order.

Guard 2 : "Who do you think long hair? EACH OTHER !"

Gardox suddenly leaps upon the second guard

Gardox : "I say thee NAY! The Go-the Go-.....The GOD OF......THUNDER !YES THAT IS WHO I BE, THOR GOD OF THUNDER !"

With an impassioned rage Thor pounds the second guard as the Guard tries to attack with his stun rod .

Ta-BOOM!

Instantly Genis is airborne, finally remembering his flight abilities in the previous Cosmic awareness flash, he peppers the ground behind the first guard with Photon blasts, making him run towards the arena entrance

SHOOM, SHOOM, SHOOM !

Out in the arena, suddenly the two unconscious guards are thrown into the dirt from the entrance ramp, the crowd goes silent, the two Alien brothers are sitting in the first row of the arena , at the center position to watch the havoc they've wrought and they also go silent and stare as Thor (running) and Captain Marvel (Flying) burst out onto the arena floor, heading directly toward them!

Alien 1 : "Stop you fools! I command you ! The nueralizers will stop you in your tracks!"

Both heroes drop where they stand as the second Alien presses a button on a wrist device he wears.

Thor : "Arrgh !"

Genis : "Unngggh!"

Alien 2: "The pain will stop as soon as you agree to give up the idea of escape and fight each other as we ordered . There are thousands of paying patrons here who I will not be allowed to be disappointed. "

Alien 1: "Yes, now fight each other, do you here me? FIGHT!"

Thor stands as the pain subsides and looks at both Captain Marvel and then the aliens.

Thor : "Aye then fight we shall."

Without another word he grabs Genis by the throat and heaves him across the arena. The crowd goes wild, as Genis stops himself in mid flight

Genis : "What th-?"

He grabs his neck as suddenly all eyes are on Thor, or rather his hand. In it is Genis's Neural collar.

Genis : "My turn Thor ."

Swooping in low Genis blasts Thor with a precision photon beam, his face in the calm of cosmic awareness as he uses his unique ability to gauge just how much power is needed to shatter the restraining device.

Shra-KOOM!

Both heroes stand and again make their way determinedly towards the orchestrators of this nightmare.

Alien 2 : "Attack them . All of you ! The ones who kill them will be granted immediate freedom!"

Genis : "Uh-oh."

Wave upon wave of gladiators fill the arena suddenly, each with only one thing on their minds, killing Thor and Captain Marvel!

Writers notes. I've always loved the original Captain Marvel, his costume, his Starlin bred powers, they were the best. His adventures after Starlin left were still top quality, especially the Englehart and Moench runs. Artwork too stayed great on that book, with the likes of Al Milgrom and Pat Broderick taking over from the departed Starlin. Mar-Vell was the guy I waited every sixty days to read about as a kid. Sadly, Marvel saw fit to kill him off in 1982, after his book had been canceled yet again by the powers that be in the beginning of the X-Men inspired madness of crazy sales that kids kept driving up, as all other things were forced down. Including this far to little seen gem.

Some ten years later Marvel introduced Genis-Vell, or Legacy as he was called at first in a Ron Marz written Silver Surfer annual. He later got his own Marvel book called , surprisingly enough, Captain Marvel ! Again, the book was canceled, this time after only six issues. This didn't really sadden me to much, while I liked Genis well enough, I couldn't stand the writer they had hired to chronicle his adventures. Fabian Nicieza had always struck me as to condescending and had a habit of trying to X-ify everything he touched. The best example of this in Genis' case was the fact that he fought a guy known as X-Treme in one issue, who has close ties to the X-men and the Shi'ar , as well as having the cover of the next issue depict Yon-Rogs son looking VERY much like an angry Cable (Check it out, he's even got the prerequisite glowing eye on the cover).

Anyway, about five months ago I came upon Vans site and joined up, discovering the fan-fic area , which quickly became my favorite of the whole shebang. Along the way I started writing Thor, as well as my twelve part epic Avengers 2009 : The War. But I always wanted to resurrect Mar-Vell. I even wrote a logical resurrection tale which now appears on the site, but Van wanted to keep Marv dead due to his own respect and love for the character. In truth I've had about a 50-50 split on the question of resurrecting Mar-Vell, as readers of the little story I wrote seem to love it or despise it equally, so keeping him dead, while not my first choice by any means, is okay by me, as I've come to enjoy Vans take on the character of Genis in the six issues he wrote, and I hope to expand on that in my run.
