Chapter 1 - General Information

"...a storeroom stacked from floor to ceiling with bolts of cloth, clothing, boots, hides made or uncut, sleeping furs and rolls of tapestries and rugs." (Dragonsinger, p123)

The Weavercraft covers a diverse range of occupations, from the creation of yarns and fabrics from raw fibres, to the colouring of those fabrics, to the making of those fabrics into clothing, to tapestries, quilting, embroidery, knitting, etc. etc. Speaking strictly canonically, the Weavercraft does not work in leather, but since the Tannercraft on PernMUSH is NPC, the Weavers have also been known to produce descriptions of leather items of clothing.

Pernese like bright colours, especially in tapestries and rugs, since they help to cheer up the dark caves in which they live. All dyes are made from natural materials. The Weavercraft produces threads of rich golden, brilliant orange and other rainbow hues, but the dyeing process is a deep Craft secret.

The basic thing to remember about Pernese clothing is that it is loosely based on medieval clothing, except that people wear trousers instead of tights. Most clothing is made from fur, wool, linen, cotton, sisal or hide. Since there are no silkworms on Pern, there is no silk - sisal is used instead. Cotton is considered a luxury material, because its great flexibility means that it's always in high demand. Tunics and trousers are often made from leather. However, leather jackets (made from wherhide) are generally for the purposes of dragonriding and fighting Thread.

There isn't a nudity taboo on Pern. People generally swim or bathe naked. However, graphic naked @descs are not in good taste. In fact, all @descs displayed in a public area should follow the conventions of what's acceptable in a public setting in real life. Your @desc can simply state: 'S/he is wearing no clothing for swimming.' Some people do wear swimsuits, though Pernese folk would consider it a frivolous fashion statement.
