3.1 Joining the Weavercrafthall

The Weavercraft is always on the lookout for enthusiastic new people who wish to become a part of the crafthall. There are several ways to do this: you can become a Weaver, or join the Hall as a staffmember, resident, or paying student. Everyone is welcome to apply! Please +mail the Masterweaver and/or Craftsecond ('news weavers' online lists them) if you're interested in joining us.

If you'd like to become a Weaver, there are two possibilities: You can take the traditional, frequently taken route, and apply as an apprentice. Or, if you're an experienced roleplayer with a good knowledge of PernMUSH, you can apply to become an 'older journeyranker'. 'Older journeyrankers' are journeyrankers over the age of 30 Turns who live at the Weavercrafthall.

3.1.1 Apprentices

Most people joining the Craft as weavers start at the junior apprentice level and then work their way upwards.

If you'd like to become an apprentice, you'll need to interview with one of the master weavers.

Minimum requirements for Weaver apprentice applicants include:

  1. You must have had a character on PernMUSH for at least a RL week. We want you to be sure the Weavercraft is what is best for your character. If you're new, we suggest that you spend some time looking around, getting a feel for your character and the game, and reading '+info newbie' online before asking to apprentice with us.

  2. Your character should be of a suitable age to be an apprentice, which is usually between the ages of 11-20 Turns. Exceptions can be made, if you have a good IC reason to justify it, but if you're new, we suggest you stick to these age guidelines.

If you would like to interview, contact one of the master weavers, (typing '+rwho wvr' when online lists all weavers currently online and their ranks) and ask if you can schedule an interview. If no one is available, please +mail the Craftmaster and Craftsecond ('news weavers' online lists who they are) asking for an interview, and mentioning the times you are available.

The interview consists of three sections:

  1. The IC portion - This is how the interview usually begins. Basically you'll just be roleplaying with the interviewer for a little while so that we can get a general idea of your character and RP skills.

  2. The audition piece - We ask that you prepare a sample of your descriptive skills to show the interviewer. Write up a description of some weaver item, such as a dress, tapestry, etc. This description can either be on a @created object, or you can +mail it to the interviewer. We appreciate originality. Remember too, that as your character is just starting out, the object described can be imperfect, or even downright ugly. However, the description itself should be well-written and free of grammatical or spelling errors.

If you aren't a good descer and/or don't want to write descriptions, don't worry - it's alright to join the craft purely for roleplay. If you don't want to write descriptions, simply tell your interviewer at the time of the interview.

  3. OOC section - At the beginning or end of the interview, the interviewer may ask you a few OOC questions to get some general idea of you (as opposed to your character) and your knowledge of PernMUSH. Don't worry about them. The only wrong answers are untruthful ones.

Usually, you'll be told right away whether you've been accepted as an apprentice. Sometimes it may take a bit longer, but you should definitely get a reply within a few days of the interview. If you don't, we've probably lost you in the mess of our real lives. :) Drop us a nice reminder +mail.

Once you become an apprentice, you should type '+lhelp new crafters' in a Weavercraft room online. That'll hopefully help to answer the question 'where do I go from here?' :) If you have any questions about apprenticing, feel free to contact the Masterweaver or Craftsecond.

3.1.2 Older Journeyrankers

If you are an experienced roleplayer with a good knowledge of PernMUSH, you can apply to become an 'older journeyranker'. These are characters created specifically to become journeyrank weavers. Their purpose is to provide a broader spectrum of RP beyond characters between the 12-30 age range. The limitations for older journeyrankers are:

  1. The character must be at least 30 years old.
  2. The character is not eligible for promotion.
  3. The character will not be posted outside the Weavercrafthall.

Beyond this, the character can be anything you like. If you want to be an older journeyranker, please +mail the Masterweaver online with your character proposal. You will probably be asked to RP as that character and have an interview of some sort.

3.2 Information for New Crafters

Once you're made a weaver, you'll be given a Weavercraft knot. Type '+help knots' when online to learn how to use it. You can also set your POS attribute to reflect your new position ('+help finger' online for more).

You should also look over the Weavercraft bulletin board to get up to date about the latest happenings in the craft. Including the command '+bbread/wvr new' in your @aconnect attribute will show you any new bulletin board posts whenever you log in ('+help bb' and 'help @aconnect' online for more).

Feel free to spend some time exploring the crafthall and meeting up with your fellow crafters who live here. The Great Hall, for instance, is a great central room for weavers to meet up with each other and roleplay. Get out and have fun.

As a weaver, you should familiarize yourself with the information which the Weavercraft has placed on the infobot (Type '+help info' online for more). Type '+info weaver' online to start reading. The local help for the Weavercraft is also extremely valuable. Typing '+lhelp' while in a Weavercrafthall room online will show you a list of Weavercraft local help topics.

If you're a new apprentice, you'll want to @link yourself ('help @link' online) to one of the apprentice dormitories. There's a male dorm and a female dorm. You figure it out. :) If you like, you can @create a cot for yourself, or, if you're not code-savvy, type 'cot request' while in one of the apprentice dorms online.

If you're a new older journeyranker, you'll want your own room leading off the journeyrankers' hallway on the second floor. If one hasn't been created for you yet, it probably slipped our minds. Let the Craftmaster or Craftsecond know, and they'll @dig one for you.

3.2.1 Commissions

Any weaver may accept a commission. Sometimes the customer just wishes to RP commissioning something from you, (see 'news bargaining' online) and other times they will want you to actually write a description for them. If you are asked to write a description, and you are an apprentice, you MUST GET APPROVAL of the description from a journeyranker or master before you hand it over to the customer. It's also nice if you can include some sort of credit in the description (for example, 'Underneath the hem is the Weavercraft seal with the name Apprentice Fred.').

The normal procedure for delivering a description is to +mail the text to the customer and RP the transaction. If a customer wants a coded object, you may provide it for them if you wish.

3.2.2 Projects for Weavers

If you like to write descriptions, there are a number of things you can do:

Typing '+lhelp commissions' will give you more information about taking on commissions for the Weavercraft.

Check the Weavercraft's bulletin board regularly - available commissions are sometimes posted there. It's a good idea to put the command '+bbread/wvr new' in your @aconnect online (type '@edit me/aconnect=$,;+bbread/wvr new'), so that you will see the new notices whenever you log on.

Make sure your 'pos' indicates you're a Weaver ('+help finger' online for more).

Stating online in your @doing that you're a weaver who's accepting commissions (type something like '@doing Weaver, accepting commissions') can attract customers.

Your mentor, if you have one, might be drowning in commissions and may be only too pleased to give some to you. :) It can't hurt to ask.

The Weavercraft display tent can always use new items. As well, each area of the Weavercrafthall has a different theme where you can display your descriptions (+mail Opa or Varina to get your descriptions added). Even if you have no commissions, there are always descriptions you can write. However, if you're an apprentice, make sure you get your work approved before putting it on display.

Weavers are also encouraged to come up with ideas for special projects they'd like to take on. Page or +mail Opa and Varina if you have any.

3.2.3 The Weavercraft's Display Tent

The Weavercraft has a number of sellable items on display in our gather tent, both as actual objects and as +viewable descriptions. Normally the tent is located in the Inner Courtyard of the crafthall (type '+go weaver-cy' then 'enter tent'). During Gathers or festivals, our display tent is usually a very popular attraction. Apprentices, Journeyrankers and Masters alike are more than welcome to come out and staff the tent at these times.

The tent is comprised of three areas: the main area, which one comes into upon entering the tent from outside, the clothing display area, which you can get to from the main area, and the tapestries and other goods display area, which you can get to from the main area. You can also go back and forth between the two display areas.

Since action occurring in the main area of the tent cannot be heard from either of the two display areas, there are a number of commands available in the main area to communicate with people in the display areas. They are:

cdsay
ogsay
cdpose
ogpose
cdemit
ogemit
Commands beginning with 'cd' are for communicating with the clothing display area. Those beginning with 'og' are for the tapestries and other goods display area. The commands in the first column allow you to say into an area. Those in the second column allow you to pose into an area. Those in the third column allow you to emit into an area.

Two more commands are also available to any weavers of Apprentice rank or up. These will be useful when making a copy of an item in the tent for a customer (more on that in a moment). 'cdlist' will give you a list of all the objects in the clothing display area and their dbrefs. 'oglist' will do the same for the tapestries and other goods display area.

If a customer would like to have one of the objects, they are to receive a copy. None of the items in the tent are to actually leave the tent, although customers may want, especially for clothing items, to pick items up and try out their commands. Just make sure the customers don't walk away with them. :) RPing bargaining with customers is always a fun time - 'news bargaining' and 'news prices' will be helpful. Any customers who like one of the descriptions in the tent's +views should feel free to use them, with the proper crediting.

To make a copy of an item on display, first @create a new item, then @parent the new item to the original (using the dbref of the original which you saw from the 'cdlist' and 'oglist' commands mentioned earlier). All weavers of Apprentice rank and up should be able to @parent without any problems (if you get an error message, talk to Opa). After doing this, typing the command 'wvr help ' will show you any extra things you need to do to the new item. Then, @set the new item CHOWN_OK and give it to the customer.

Junior apprentices who get requests for items on display in the tent should get a weaver of Apprentice rank or up to make the copy. If no such weavers are online, explain to the customer that they will get a copy as soon as possible, then +mail Opa and/or Varina asking for the copy to be made.

Weavers can have their projects put on display in the tent. If you are an apprentice, you MUST get approval of your project from a journeyranker or master before it can be put on display.

All projects which consist of just a description and no code should be displayed in the tent as +views. Contact Opa to get your description put as a +view in the display tent.

If you have a coded item you wish to put on display, you may do so. First, @parent your object to #11248. Next, type '@lock/parent =@#3098'. Then, @set your object PARENT_OK. Any special help for weavers making copies of your object for customers should go in your object's TEXT-HELP attribute. Drop your object in the appropriate area of the tent, and you're done! It would also be nice if you could just drop a quick +mail to Opa letting her know that you've put your object in the tent. If quota is a problem for you, contact Opa.

3.3 Weavercrafthall Meetings

'Dinner' events are the regularly scheduled meetings of the Weavercraft. They take place in the Great Hall (type '+go weaver-gh' online) at 9:30pmET on the third Tuesday of each month. Reminders will be posted on the Weavercraft bulletin board when a dinner is coming up. If you miss a meeting, you can either ask Opa to email you the log, or retrieve the log yourself at http://www.interlog.com/~kms/Weavers/Logs/. Depending on the state of Opa's RL, it may take a while for her to finish editing the log, so be patient. :)

ICly those in the Weavercraft eat together twice a day, so the RPed dinners are considered spolight events in the normal schedule. All members of the Weavercrafthall are more than welcome, including staff, residents and weavers posted elsewhere on Pern.

The dinners are a time for all the members of the crafthall to congregate and roleplay with each other, and for the Masters to keep everyone else abreast of what's happening in the craft. During the dinners, new members of the craft are officially introduced and important IC matters are announced. It's often also when promotions are handed out.

OOC announcements and issues that involve the entire Weavercraft are also discussed during these dinners, after all the IC matters have been dealt with. If you have comments, ideas or concerns that you wish to discuss with the entire Weavercraft, please bring them up during the dinner. Input from all members of the Weavercrafthall is welcomed.

3.4 Mailing List

The Weavercraft has its own email list. It's presently low volume, but important discussions do sometimes take place on it. Anyone who is part of the Weavercrafthall - weavers, residents, crafters posted here, etc. - can subscribe. Just email:

[email protected]

The body of your message should read:

3.5 Search Policy

For obvious IC reasons, master Weavers will never be Searched. Also, since the Weavercraft currently has a very small population of journeyrankers, journeyrank Weavers will not be released for Search either, unless they wish to be Stand-only candidates (i.e. the Weyr Searches them under the strict understanding that their candidacy will not culminate in Impression).

As well, no more than two Weavers will be released for any one Search. This isn't a restriction on how many Weavers can apply, however, the Masterweaver will ask the Weyr involved that a maximum of two Weavers actually be chosen for Search. In addition to this, a maximum of two Weavers will be released as Stand-only candidates - this will be a case of first come, first served. These policies do not apply to residents.

These policies are not meant to be unduly restrictive, rather, they are in place to ensure that we don't lose so many crafters to the Weyrs as to severely deplete our population. :)
