2.1 Commissioning a Weaver

To commission something, (either a desc or simply to RP a commission), just talk to any Weaver. We prefer that you find and RP with a Weaver IC rather than paging or +mailing the transaction. '+rwho wvr' lists all Weavers who are online and their postings. Although being strictly canonical, you would probably ask your Hold, Hall or Weyr weaver to make something for you, please feel free to commission items from any of our weavers regardless of rank or posting. There are also some lovely items in our display tent in our Hall's Courtyard ('+go weaver-cy') which are available for sale.

Our normal procedure for handling any transaction is to +mail the desc (if a description is asked for) and to RP the sale. Weavers generally bargain using the guidelines in 'news bargaining'.

2.2 Ranks for Weavers

There are several tiers of rank for weavers within the Weavercrafthall. They are, in order from lowest to highest:

  1. Jr. Apprentice
  2. Apprentice
  3. Sr. Apprentice
  4. Jr. Journeyranker
  5. Journeyranker
  6. Master/(Sr. Journeyranker)
  7. Subcraft head/Apprentice Master
  8. Craftsecond
  9. Craftmaster

A weaver will start out as a junior apprentice when they are first accepted into the Craft. Once they have settled in and begun to RP regularly, (which doesn't usually take very long) they will be promoted to full Apprentice.

Further promotions are based on things such as activity, RP, and a weaver's contributions to the craft. Your IC age also has to be taken into account. Even if you're the best, most active person the craft has ever seen, if your character is only 12 Turns old, it's simply not IC to promote you to journeyranker.

If for some reason you don't wish your character to be promoted from his/her present rank, *please* let the Masterweaver know about it! Weavers are almost never informed before they're promoted, since it's much more fun for it to be a surprise, so if we want to promote you but you don't want to be promoted, the surprise can turn nasty, for both parties.

Note: "Sr. Journeyranker" is not part of the normal 'rank ladder'. Rather, it is a special rank reserved for situations where a Journeyrank Weaver deserves a promotion but either cannot be (i.e. those in the older journeyranker program) or doesn't want to be promoted to Master (although any Sr. Journeyranker not in the older journeyranker program is of course free at any time to change their mind and ask to become a Master after all).

2.3 Subcrafts of the Weavercraft

As the Harpers have subcrafts such as voice or composition, so does the Weavercrafthall have five subcrafts of its own which its crafters may specialize in if they so choose. Apprentices start out in the Weavercraft unspecialized and may decide to specialize in one of the subcrafts after they walk the tables. Contact Opa, Varina, or one of the PC subcraft heads if you're interested in specializing. The subcrafts are:

2.3.1 Dyeing

Headed by the Dye Master (currently Caladin, an NPC). Deals with colour theory, herbs for dyeing, dye processes, mordants, etc.

2.3.2 Fibre Production

Headed by the Fibre Master (currently Nola, an NPC). Deals with decortication, the extraction and pounding of fibre pulp, spinning, etc., although clothweaving is the domain of the weavers.

2.3.3 Knitting

Headed by the Masterknitter (currently Erna, an NPC). Deals with knitting, crocheting, lacemaking and other related closework.

2.3.4 Tailoring

Headed by the Mastertailor (currently Master Jorai). Deals with fashion and the design and production of clothing.

2.3.5 Weaving

Headed by the Masterweaver, (currently Master Opa). The weavers take the fibre produced by the fibre subcraft to produce cloth and tapestries.

2.4 Postings

Once a person has been promoted past the apprentice level, the Craftmaster will most likely send them away from the crafthall to live elsewhere on Pern. This is referred to as 'posting' a crafter. A posted weaver's job is to supply their skills to whichever hold, hall or Weyr they have been posted to. Those who live there may commission from the weaver whatever clothing, tapestries, or other Craft items they are in need of, free of charge. ICly, the hold, hall or Weyr where the weaver is posted would supply all needed materil, and would have negotiated some sort of annual contract with the weaver prior to the posting. It is also the duty of the weaver to educate the children at his/her posting in the basics of the craft, and also to seek out promising youngsters for weaver apprenticeship.

When weavers get posted somewhere, they go to the new hold, hall or Weyr to live. OOCly, they receive a knot from the place of their posting and become as much a part of life there as in the Weaverhall itself. Of course, this shouldn't stop a posted weaver from visiting the crafthall, nor from visiting other places on Pern...having a post is an augment, not an impediment, to RP.

Another possibility is to be posted to a general area, such as 'Fort'. Weavers thus assigned would have their base at one particular place, (such as Fort Weyr) but would be expected to travel regularly to all the other places in the area (South Boll, the Harper Hall, etc.) on a regular basis. This type of posting is useful because there simply aren't enough journeyrankers and masters for every place on PernMUSH which wishes to have its own weaver.

There are five 'general area' postings which journeyrank weavers may be assigned to. Note that these five areas do not include all the PC areas on PernMUSH, since those locations with Masters permanently assigned to them do not need to have a journeyrank as well. Typing '+rwho wvr=posting/?*' online will show you which weavers are posted, and where.

2.4.1 Benden Area

2.4.2 Central Area

2.4.3 Fort Area

2.4.4 Northern Area

2.4.5 Western Area

2.5 Mentoring

The Weavercraft has a mentoring system, whereby apprentices have the option to be 'taken on' by a journeyranker, who will be, in a sense, their 'special buddy'. A mentor is, ICly speaking, someone superior in rank to you; to whom you have been assigned to report to primarily; and who is responsible for you. However, this is not meant to limit the scope of your contact with other Weavers - by no means is a mentor the only person a Weaver can talk to, do errands for, take classes from, develop relationships with, etc.

This system is based on the mentoring relationships found in Anne McCaffrey's Harper Hall trilogy (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger and Dragondrums), such as Piemur-Dirzan, Dermently-Arnor, Menolly-Robinton, etc. These books are recommended reading for anyone confused as to what mentoring is all about.

There are two main reasons for the mentoring system:

  1. The primary purpose is to help Weavers generate roleplay opportunities. If you have a mentor, you can RP doing errands for them, talking about how strict or terrific they are, the things you're learning from them, etc. You can RP with your mentor, and RP your friendships/spats/whatever with other apprentices with the same mentor as you. Likewise, mentors can RP about how annoying/talented/hardworking their apprentices are, provide projects, classes, etc. The possibilities are endless - use your imagination!

  2. The secondary purpose is to provide apprentices with a person whom they can go to with any OOC questions or comments, as well as approval of any descriptions they write. This is not to imply that apprentices can't ask help of anyone else, but they may find it useful to have a specific person they know they can always approach.

Mentoring of apprentices in the Weavercraft is done by the journeyrankers. A journeyranker interested in mentoring apprentices may volunteer to take on as many as they wish. Apprentices wishing to have a mentor should +mail Opa with the following information:

  1. Which among the 5 Weavercraft subcrafts your apprentice character is or might be interested in, if any
  2. Your general online hours
  3. Whether you have any specific journeyrankers in mind that you wish to be apprenticed to

(Note that participation in the mentoring system is optional. New apprentices may also feel more comfortable getting used to the Weavercraft first before deciding that they would like a mentor.)

The request will be forwarded to the appropriate journeyrankers, who will then fight among themselves as to who gets to take on the new apprentice. :) Every effort will be made to mentor an apprentice to a journeyranker

  1. whose IC area of study coincides with the apprentice's IC interests/talents
  2. who has similar online hours to the apprentice and
  3. whom the apprentice wishes to be apprenticed to.

Journeyrankers may also have mentors, if they so choose. Any Weaver of master rank may be a mentor to a journeyranker - please note that this includes NPC masters! Apprentices who are mentored to a journeyranker who is mentored to a master are considered to be, ICly, "under the jurisdiction" of that master, whether PC or NPC.

It is preferred, for the sake of canon, that journeyrankers in a subcraft be mentored to masters of the same subcraft, but this is not essential.

Journeyrankers wishing to create an NPC master as their mentor should +mail Opa with a character sketch of that NPC. Journeyrankers wishing to have an already-established NPC master as their mentor should +mail the Weavercraftmaster with the NPC's name. Journeyrankers wishing to have a PC master as their mentor should +mail that master to indicate their interest.

Any questions you may have about the mentoring system can be directed to Opa, Varina or your mentor.
