Ayalon firefighters abandon station
(IsraelWire-1/18) Making good on their threats to
not respond to calls form assistance despite
unprecedented storm warnings, firefighters assigned
to the Ayalon District station, responsible for the
Lod, Ramle, and Ben-Gurion International Airport
areas, have walked off the job, leaving the fire
station empty.
The firefighters are heading to the department's
headquarters in Rishon L'Tzion where they plan to
demonstrate. Firefighters explain they have still not
be paid for last month and are unwilling to continue
to remain at the station.

Interior ministry calls for additional funding for
firefighting services (IsraelWire-12/8) Minister of
the Interior Natan Sharansky is calling upon the
treasury to allocate an additional NIS 15 million to
improve the nation's fire services. The minister
stated the monies are essential for the 2000 state
budget to permit the nation's fire fighting services
to meet the growing demand.
Following this week's fires in the Carmel Forest
region, the minister stated funds were badly needed
to improve the fire department's aerial capabilities,
which are essential to combat forest fires. Sharansky
indicated that he wanted to authorize the purchase of
three NIS 4 million planes to be equipped for the
task.

Fire department training exercise averts disaster
(IsraelWire-11/5)
Fire officials explained that because of a planned training exercise in the Ayalon District of the fire department, some 20 firefighters were on hand instead of the usual six, permitting a larger and quicker response to the reports of a blaze in the Ben Shemen forest near Moshav Ginzu.
Fire officials report receiving the first calls for the forest fire at about 8:00am Wednesday. The firemen were present to participate in a training exercise simulating a hazardous materials incident. As a result, all of 20 firefighters immediately responded to the call, preventing what many officials predict may have resulted in total devastation of Ginzu.
Local council buses responded immediately to the kindergarten and daycare centers, evacuating the children to a nearby community while fire responders evacuated residents from their homes.
The available manpower and quick response were credited with averting a more serious disaster.

Government Approves Fire and EMS Station in Um el-Fahm
- (IsraelWire-1/22-04:15-IST) The government earlier this week approved the establishment of a fire and EMS (emergency medical service) station in or in proximity of the Israeli Arab village of Um el-Fahm.
The motion for the new emergency stations was put forward by Deputy Prime Minister and Minster of Tourism Moshe Katzav, who is the government representative to the Israeli Arab communities.
The move for the emergency station was prompted by a fire in Um el-Fahm about two-months ago in which three children were burned to death in a blaze which caused extensive damage to a local home.
The new station will serve the residents of Um el-Fahm and the surrounding communities.
