Monday, June 12, 2000 18:02 Fire officials explain that gas station fire could have resulted in disaster (IsraelWire-6/12) It was the quick response of firefighters that averted a disaster in southern Tel Aviv on Sunday afternoon. When the driver of a tanker truck mistakenly began pouring diesel fuel into a gasoline storage tank, an explosion resulted which immediately engulfed several private vehicles and led to the injuring of two persons, one sustaining serious burns and the second reported in light-to-moderate condition. The gas station was also destroyed as a result of the blaze. The Paz gas station at the intersection of Herzl and Shalme Streets was the scene of the blaze which fire officials explain could have wiped out the surrounding area if it was not brought under control as quickly as it was. Damage resulting from the blaze was estimated at $1.5 million. An investigation into the events leading up to the blaze has been launched.
