Police patrol service is provided by the FL Highway Patrol (on Interstate Highways and (?State Highways in unincorporated areas)) - plus County Sheriff Department units - plus city police departments. Fire protection is provided by VFDs, city FDs, County FDs, FL State Division of Forestry, US Forest Service, and onsite FDs (works, industrial, port authorities, military, NASA, federal govt, etc). Ambulance service is provided by private companies, county EMS agencies, local FDs and hospitals (all of which are supported by fire and police first responders). Helicopter ambulances are flown by hospitals or private companies - with the exception being Dade County FD which flies 1 helo ambulance and Lee County EMS which flies 1 helo.

AP reports today that Com-Net Ericsson will take over the state's 800 MHz radio system. According to the report, the system will become "privatized" with Ericsson running it. The system, which was started by Motorola in 1988 is only 40% complete. The system has cost the state $113 million. The new contract pays Ericsson $271 million dollars and runs for 20 years. Hillsborough County
HCFD simulcasts their dispatch comms (base side only) on their two "old" VHF channels: 154.130 (East/South) and 154.175 (North/West). I've noticed the same problem (open carrier with occasional digital-sounding audio "blips") once in a while on the 154.130 freq. It seems to happen on both channels, but not necessarily at the same time. There's something in the new TRS linkages that gets messed up and hangs up one or the other of the VHF repeaters.
I still have 154.130 as Channel 1 in my BC-9000XLT, and I run the radio with Priority ON, so when it happens, the whole radio hangs up until I lock out Channel 1 and set the radio to Channel 2 (154.175). Once they get someone out to fix the problem, I can go back to my usual settings. Isn't all this new technology great...(?) - info from [email protected] - 31 Oct 00

Item from [email protected] - July 2000 - Here in Orange County / Orlando Florida medcom comms are on the trunk system. All of the Orlando FD EMS units are equipped with UHF Medcom Radios which I belive is due to Florida Regulations for ALS units. The UHF radios are rarely if ever used. One of the local private ambulance companies uses a Medcom freq pair for operations but they are the only users I am aware of in the county. The private ambulance company with the Orange County transportation contract is equipped with an 800 system portable for medcom.

April 2000 - Brush Fires
Fla. Fire Burns Thousands of Acres - The Associated Press - NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - Firefighters struggled early today to contain a brush fire on the western edge of the Big Cypress Swamp which has consumed more than 10,000 acres and destroyed at least two homes. Winds fanned the fire forward as firefighters scrambled to strengthen fire lines. The blaze was situated about 10 miles east of Naples, or 130 miles south of Tampa. ``Right when we think we have a handle on it, it jumps our line and we have to chase it all over again,�� said Hank Graham, district manager for Florida�s forestry division. Residents in 50 homes and 10 businesses were asked to voluntarily evacuate, said Deborah Wright, a Collier County spokeswoman. Division of Emergency Management spokesman Danny Pitchford said at least two homes in the Golden Gate section of Collier County were destroyed. ``It�s in excess of 10,000 acres now and it could grow to 20,000 acres,�� said Jim Karels, assistant director of the Division of Forestry�s Bureau of Forest Protection. ``It�s making a hard run to the west.�� Excessive smoke Tuesday closed State Road 951, a main east-west artery, as well as a side road. Officials anticipated more closings if the wildfire cannot be contained. No rainfall was predicted today for dry central Florida.
