Page 2, continued - The easiest way to prevent a terrorist attack is to simply stop a suspicious-looking person from getting on a bus, Warnke told the drivers. Even if 40 students are waiting at a bus stop, crowding to get on, he advised them to stop any student they didn't know and ask for identification.
And if an intruder does make it on the bus and forces the driver to drive, he or she should drive along a familiar route, Warnke recommended.
"If you perceive a threat," Warnke said. "Do what you have to do to protect yourself and the kids."
Students on Gary Peters' Modesto City
bus routes regularly scuffle. As the violence gets worse, he expects the state to add bus monitors so he can concentrate on driving rather than controlling the students.
That's why Warnke's presentation was so necessary.
Even if he never comes face to face with a terrorist, Peters said, "the way society is going, unfortunately the more they make us aware, the better off we'll be."
