Heidi BordonHeidi Bordon, A 10-year veteran of the King County, (Washington State) Public Library resigned rather than carry out library policy of providing children with pornography. Heidi did not intend to resign from a position that she found to be both intellectually and emotionally satisfying. But after almost ten years as a librarian in a large library system, she could not in good conscience support 'equal and open access' to pornography being viewed by children and adults. Heidi encourages librarians to openly publicize library policies. Click Here to comment on this award. Click Here to read Heidi's story. Sept 1999
Troy BuoteOn May 20, 1999 the The Eagle Tribune, (Lawrence, Massachusetts), reported that Troy R. Buote, 30, of Methuen (MA) who had been a school bus driver for two years, on May 19 was about to return some diruptive students to the school when an angry parent blocked the bus with her van, then demanded to be let in the bus. Other parents began banging on the side of the bus, resulting in frightening kindergarten children more than they already were, a result of some older students disrupting the bus. Troy followed radioed directions, refusing to let anyone board, but one parent forced the door open, a student on the bus opened the emergency door and kids fled the bus crying. Troy Buote acted responsibly, regardless of intense circumstances. He persisted in doing everything he could to keep his kids safe until police arrived. Click Here to comment on this award. Sept 1999
Kathy Hoskins When Kathy Hoskins, a parent, discovered in eary May (1999) that one or more bus drivers at Dallas City Schools in the state of Illinois, were having students leave the bus and raise the railroad flashing arms so the bus could proceed, she took action. When school officials acknowledged they were aware of the practice and didn't object to it, Kathy went to the press, including the nearby Hawk Eye Newspaper in Burlington, Iowa.
