The Need for Culture Based Knowledge Sharing Model (CBKS Model)

A number of Knowledge Management frameworks and models have been discussed in literature review. One reason for the large variety of frameworks found for Knowledge Management may be due to the fact that researchers have been viewing Knowledge from different perspectives.

During the literature review it is observed that the models developed for KM over the years are thought provoking and give good picture of Knowledge Management, but it would be justified to deduce that all models lack at least one of the following aspects of Knowledge Management.

1- Distinction between knowledge and Knowledge Asset is not clear

2- Human interactions are not considered as prime factor in most of the KM Models

The “Culture Based Knowledge Sharing Model” draws a distinct line between “Knowledge” and “Knowledge Assets”, a point that has not been highlighted in previous models.

The Culture based Model stresses that true “Knowledge” cannot exist as a separate entity outside human cognition (or any other intelligence conscious). Therefore we can say that true Knowledge cannot be separated from mental process.

Books, mathematical formulas, articles are regarded as “Knowledge Assets”. These assets must be mingled with intelligence to become “Knowledge” and create value.

The above assumption naturally requires the Model to place human interaction at the center of any knowledge management initiative. Model emphasizes employee-to-employee relations and employee interaction with respect to organization and communication channels for understanding knowledge dynamics in an organization. Knowledge management models in the past, have not given this central position to knowledge-worker.

The “Culture Based Knowledge Sharing Model” views, an organization as a dynamic and an integrated social structure, it provides a good framework for understanding and analysis of Knowledge dynamics in an organization.

As the Culture Based Knowledge Sharing Model is a major shift from traditional paradigm, It would therefore be best to first establish concept of “Knowledge” as considered in this Model, and based on this view of Knowledge we may proceed to develop a model.
