CLIVE’S PAGE

Clive, that’s me, hunter/breadwinner/top gun of this unit.  There is no way that I am going to bore people with things like what I do or where I work.  You didn't surf this far to find that out did you !  What you want is to find out what makes me tick, what rings my bell etc.

Well, here goes.  If you read my first webpage you will realise that I am into cars and engines in a big way.  I really love to tinker with these things, which, if you follow the links on this page you will get to find out.

I really like messing with carburetors and “clockwork” distributors.  There’s something satisfying when you get an engine tuned up right with the settings optimized, without the aid of digital electronics !  I find Webers/Dellorto’s particularly good but I don’t mind the odd SU.

In fact, I am currently looking into modifying a pair of these on the V8 fitted to my LandRover to operate on LPG.  I want the engine to operate solely on LPG and using an off the shelf mixer would preclude me from setting the balance between the two of them.  I intend to remove the existing jet assemblies and open out the bores to suit 15mm copper tubes, which I will bond into place.  There will be an elbow soldered onto these tubes along with a short length of straight tube, which will connect to the hose from the LPG vapouriser.  I am going to leave the pistons in place (the variable venturi effect with these carburetors is legendary, I don’t want to loose the flexibility, especially off road) but remove the needle assemblies.  The spring will be removed to assist throttle response, I think this will be ok, the original design was to assist in vaporizing the petrol, I have the luxury of starting with a gas (LPG) so that part of the calibration is sorted.  I will have to block off the redundant ports in the carburetor bodies, but that should be straightforward.  At a quick glance, the engine will appear standard, come to think of it, if it works ok, this could be a way to run classic cars on LPG without ugly mixing valves attached, spoiling the lines !

Still to be finalised are a few more pages.  I just haven’t got round to it yet, but if the links are in place I can upload them as soon as they are complete.
