PG County by Connie Briscoe

Review Written by Yolanda

P.G. County, A must read.

After reading Big Girls Dont Cry and Sisters and Lovers, Connie Briscoe gives us a taste of Lust, Sex, Secrets and Deceit. P.G. County is located in Maryland. Judging from the way she describes the town, anyone that visited the upscale black co-op of Silver Spring Maryland, or has Money and good credit will relate to Prince Georges County. The five women who represent this town is Barbara, the alcoholic wife married to Bradford Bentley who is a millionaire. He owns his own Software business. Candice is re married with two daughters, one which is dating Pearls son, Kenyatta, Pearl is the hairdresser who struggled to make sure her son got into the neighborhood so that he could get into the right schools. Jolene has issues in her marriage, she is married to Patrick who also has secrets hidden behind his hard work. Ashley is the daughter of Candice. Lee is a teenager who was abused on the run, searching for her own father. She believes he is rich and powerful. Five women share something in common after a secret is revealed. In a lot of cases you will find yourself in as Barbara, or know someone who shared her life along with the fluffy stuff, that reminds you of a soap opera P.G. County, It brims with warmth; energy and positive messages enjoy.

She has proven herself again, by bringing us lives that are often ignored

Connie Briscoe's latest effort, PG County, in my opinion left little to be desired. The lives of the residents of upscale PG County was interesting and a page turner in some areas, however, the author left a lot of loose ends in the books conclusion. I don't know if this is because she is planning a sequel to the novel or she wanted the reader to come their own conclusions. The characters of Jolene, Patrick, Bradford, Barbara, Pearl, Kenyatta, Ashley and Candace all intertwined. The storyline was typical as it is in these types of novels, dealing with the rich vs. poor in society. The Lee character didn't really fit into the story. I felt like she was forced into the story to make it more interesting. It just made it more predictable. Nothing in this novel suprised me. It reminded me of a nighttime soap opera, just with African-American characters.

I had a love/hate relationship with this novel. I really loved the concept of African Americans have a big piece of the pie, but I hated how underdeveloped the characters were in the novel. Connie Briscoe left too many openings in the ending of the book. She did not close out any storyline. The ending of this book was formatted where she can create at least 5 more novels from the book. She should've had a "to be continued" on the last page.

I thought PG County was a good read. It kind of reminded me of an African American version of Dynasty.....excluding the sexual content.

PG County was drama from beginning to end. I had a special interest in Jolene. She was a classic example of a woman who's never satisfied, as well as one trying to keep up with the Jones'.

I was mostly happy for Barbara in the end. She already had problems with the bottle, and she was well aware of her husband's infidelity. Barbara, however, did not allow that to be her downfall, instead, she chose to be a strong woman and take control of her life.

Although the book was well written, I didn't quite understand Lee's role. She was mentioned throughout the book, but you couldn't help but to wonder how she would eventually fit into this story. Honestly, I wasn't impressed with how the author incorporated her into the story. I basically thought the circumstances that took place at the party and in the end was a bit unrealistic.

Overall, PG County was quite entertaining. I would recommend this book to my friends. On a scale of 1-5, I would rate this book a strong 4.
