One Hand In My Pocket - Review

One Hand In My Pocket by Joyce Davis, Mikel Husband, & Kendra Lee
Review Written by Elvila

ONE HAND IN MY POCKET by Joyce E Davis*Mikel Husband*Kendra Lee was three inspirational and moving stories about people who live with the HIV virus, through the power of love they were able to deal with their illness.

Decisions, Decisions by Joyce E. Davis
Gloria had a difficult choice to make; whether to continued to date Reginald after discovered he was HIV positive.

The story was a well-told story, about over coming obstacle in life through love and supports from friends. The story shows how powerful love is, but the author left you wondering about certain issues.

ON THE WAY TO THE ALTER by Mikel Husband
Lydia was engaged to Samuel and she find out she was pregnant. When she went for a blood test she was tested positive with the HIV virus. When Lydia told her fianc she was HIV positive, he was face with a difficult decision whether to marry Lydia or call off the wedding.

In the story it was amazing how supportive Lydias family and friends were, even her future in-laws were very understanding. I do not how realistic the story was, but it shows the reader that love can conquer all.

SECOND TIME AROUND by Kendra Lee
Emmanuel was a 13-year old foster child dealing with the HIV virus. The Parker family was faced with a difficult decision whether to adopt him or send him back, because he was HIV positive. The school Emmanuel attended had parents scared for their children. They were even protesting in front of the school.

The story taught the reader how ignorant some people are about HIV/AIDS virus and that we need to educate our selves about the disease. The story will touch your heart

One Hand In My Pocket is comprised of three short stories consisting of the same subject: HIV.

The first story, "Decisions, Decisions, Decisions" by Joyce Davis is about Reginald and Gloria meeting at a time when neither one was looking for a significant other. They end up falling in love but Reginald has a secret that could change their relationship forever. Does Gloria eventually get over this new information about the man she thinks is her soulmate giving the relationship a chance, or does she forget about Reginald forever?

The second story, "On The Way To The Altar" by Mikel Husband is about a loving couple on the way to the altar until the bride-to-be finds out she is HIV positive two weeks after finding out she is pregnant. This story is very touching and it brought tears to my eyes.

The third story, "Second Time Around" by Kendra Lee was about Emmanuelle. Oh that Emmanuelle. Emmanuelle's heart was filled with so much love that even in his misfortunes he is able to share that love with everyone around him. Emmanuelle was diagnosed with HIV as a child and placed in the system. Now a teenage awaiting adoption, Emmanuelle is faced with rejection once again after the family who was set to adopt him found out he is HIV positive. Even though they didn't want him he was able to find a loving family and home to give him all the love and attention he needed and desired.

All in all "One Hand In My Pocket" was a very touching and enlightening book. I think it will leave in the mind of the reader the question of "What would you do if you found out that a friend or loved one was diagnosed as HIV positive?"

My emotions ran high as I read each story in this Novella. All the stories dealt with HIV, but in a different realm.

The first story was about finally falling in love with your soul mate, only to find out that he is HIV positive. She was a brave woman to decide to go forward in this relationship, especially knowing the ramifications of your lover being HIV positive.

The second story was my favorite. I really love the writing style of this author. The Author gave subtitles to the chapters to indicate the way the story was going to go. This story was very touching and heartbreaking for me. I know HIV affects couples daily, but to be put in a position where I visualized the emotions that this disease had on this couple just tore me up inside. I was pleased with the ending because this couple found themselves back together, and not for the baby's sake.

The last story was just a great story. This teenager possessed enough love for an army. He deserved a lifetime of happiness.

Overall, this book was a great read. I will definitely recommend it to others.
