Child of God

|
Review Written by Elvila |
Child of God by Lolita Files was a well-written story about three generations. The story shows readers how secrets can destroy a family life and it can become a pattern from one generation to the next. We all can learn something from the story.
Lolita Files is truly a talented writer that keeps the reader interested. She is able to take you to the past without confusing the reader. The book is truly worth reading.

At first I was a bit hesitant to read this book. However, as soon as I read the first paragraph I was hooked! This was a really interesting read, although it was somewhat disturbing. I was the most proud of Ophelia. She was able to overcome obstacles within her life and still make it through. And in through it all, she was able to find true love. I especailly love the way Ms. Files described events in detail so the reader was able to
paint a vivid picture. I highly reccommend this book to everyone.

I was a bit reluctant about reading this book. When this book was suggested by the group months ago, I thought that the book would be similar to other voodoo driven novels that I read. I must say that I was really impressed with Lolita Files style of writing. The novel was well presented and captured my attention from the opening line.
This was the first novel that I read by Ms. Files and I am happy to say that it won't be the last. I enjoyed the characters in the novel. I think the book was very graphic, but not to the point that I still could not use my imagination to visual what Ms. Files was trying to make her readers see.
This is definitely a four and half star novel in book.

I found this book well written and very visual. Lolita Files' writing style has always been wonderful in her past novels. However, this story about the Boten family set in the South in the 1940's, was her best so far and very different from her other three novels. The lives of the Characters of Sukie, Lay, Grace, Walter, Polo, Coolie, Ophelia and Javier all intertwined in some way shape or form. The mistakes made by this family continued from generation to generation. The secrets, lies and deceptions are what tore this family apart. It was a vicious cycle. In my opinion, I think
that Files adding Sukie's mystical gift or curse of practicing voodoo was pretty much a distraction to the reader and an excuse for the rest of the family to make the mistakes that they made which came to their demise. In other words, Sukie's powers had nothing to do with this families problems. The
horrible cycle of devestation this family faced was set in motion long before Walter met Sukie. Even as the book ends you're not sure that this vicious cycle has come to an end.
As I stated before, Files writing made you feel the evil coming off of Lay as the years passed. Every violent turn in the book (and there was plenty) you could visualize as though you were experiencing it yourself. This book was definetely a page turner. The subject matter was a little sensitive for my taste, but I was able to look past that with the help of the author and look deeper into what the story was trying to say.
Out of 1-5 stars, I give it a 5! Highly recommended!

Child of God, Hard to put Down..
Child of God, is a story the reveals the Trials and Tribulations of a family that was deeply rooted in Sin and Deceit. Ms. Files did an excellent job telling the story of the Botens family, this family leaves you reflecting on self, or thoughts of someone who you may have known that lived their life. This family deals with a curse of generation incest, drug abuse, voodoo, prostitution and love believe it or not.
