Doom Tree:

Ail/Alan:

Ail arrived in the beginning of SMR with Ann in a space pod thingy which was vaguely organic.  In order to survive, they must find energy for the Doom Tree (Makaiju).  In truth, Ail was an alien but not from another planet . . . he was linked to a great tree known as the Doom Tree.  He disguised himself as a student and enrolled in Cross Roads High (Juuban Junior High).  He is highly talented with a flute, but at one time admitted that it was his destiny to play the flute.
In order to steal energy, Ail would supply a "Cardian," which was much like the first season's henchman, only with some sort of plant basis.  Ail would play on his flute to call forth and command the Cardian.
Not too surprisingly, he falls in love with Usagi, which makes Ann very jealous.  Later, the Makaiju becomes active and tells of its state and how it was being poisoned by the negative energy Ail and Ann stole from beings to supply the tree.  Sailor Moon then healed the tree from all the harmful energy.  Ail, having noticed his wrong ways, was more inclined to be healed and cleansed and know the truth of the Doom Tree.  Ail and Ann left with a seedling of the Doom Tree to start anew, ending the first half of SMR.

Ann:

Ail's alien partner in SMR who also enrolled in Juuban and ends up in Usagi's class.  She tends to need energy more frequently than Ail, the the point of every episode or every other episode she's zappin' up the Doom Tree's energy to rejuvenate her own lost supply.
While Ail would have the ability to call forth and command the Cardian to do his (their) bidding, it was Ann who would constantly choose the Cardian, a special knack she must have.
Once she sees Mamoru walking down the street, she immediately falls for him.  This makes it so she and Usagi would compete for his affection for most of the season (Mamoru lost his memory in the beginning of SMR so he doesn't remember his relationship with Usagi).  However, because Ann is a jealous girl (She is!  She's not one of my fav. SM villains, but she does tend to get overly jealous), whenever Ail tries to win Usagi's affections she often overreacts despite the fact that she does worse to try to win Mamoru's affections.  In the end, she becomes mortally wounded from an attack and is held in Ail's arms, romantically so.  From that positive energy she was able to be revived by the Doom Tree and given a second chance.    She left with Ail with a seedling of the Doom Tree to start anew, ending the first half of SMR.
