The National Assembly is composed of 125 Members, each elected in a riding under the single-member constituency plurality system. The Constitution provides that a general election must be held in Québec at the latest every five years.
The last election was held on 30 November 1998. The Parti Québécois, led by Lucien Bouchard, won 76 seats and now forms the Government. The Québec Liberal Party, whose leader is Jean Charest, forms the Official Opposition with 48 Members. One Member was elected for the Action Démocratique du Québec party, its leader Mario Dumont.
As of 6 October 2000, the make-up of the National Assembly is as follows: 75 Parti Québécois Members, 48 Liberal Party Members, 1 Action Démocratique Member and 1 vacant seat. 29 Members of the National Assembly are women.
