Lionel Conacher was a stalwart defenseman on four different clubs during his twelve year NHL tenure. At six feet one inch and 195 pounds he represented an imposing barrier to the opposition's offensive thrusts. Conacher also contributed on offense with career totals of 80 goals and 185 points. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Conacher was a part of much success as an amateur including a Memorial Cup victory with the Toronto Canoe Club in 1920. He made his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1925-26. During the early stages of the folllowing season he joined the New York Americans where he remained for nearly four seasons including a one year stint as the club's player/coach in 1929-30. In 1930-31 Conacher joined the Montreal Maroons for three seasons and was chosen to the NHL Second All-Star Team in 1932-33. Conacher spent the 1933-34 campaign with the Chicago Blackhawks. In his finest NHL season he was placed on the NHL First All-Star Team, he finished as the runner up in the voting for the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player and was an integral part of the first ever Chicago Stanley Cup team. The next season Conacher returned to the Montreal Maroons where he played his final three years. His play was a big reason why the Maroons won the Stanley Cup in 1935. Conacher left the NHL on a high note in 1937 when he again finished second in the voting for the Hart Trophy and was chosen to the NHL Second All-Star Team.
