People We Met There
International and US based Regional Advisors had a great time meeting each other at the 4th Winter Conference in New York last February 8 and 9, 2003. Some met for the first time, others greeted each other warmly after having seen each other before in other SCBWI conferences.
New York based members, RAs, and conference old-timers helped those who came for the first time from out of town and other countries not only in navigating the conference but also in seeing more of and enjoying New York City. Thanks to them, a group was able to see a couple of Broadway musicals - Thoroughly Modern Millie on Thursday night, and Les Miserables on Friday night. The system of having a SCBWI New York Buddy was in place, people explored and tried out restaurants, recommended those that they liked to others, and in general had a productive and enjoyable stay.
All this inspite of the two-day snowstorm that hit NYC and the surrounding northeastern parts of the U.S. during the conference. For those who stayed on longer in the Big Apple, the unique experience of being in New York City in mid-winter 2003 was made even more unforgettable by a hundred thousand strong anti-war protest in Mid-Manhattan and an honest to goodness blizzard that closed down schools, parts of Amtrak, and La Guardia airport. There were also massive flight cancellations at JFK but thankfully some flights quickly got back on track - including the one that brought Beaulah home to Manila safely and right on schedule!
