SCBWI members from the Philippines

Three members from the Philippines attended the 4th SCBWI Winter Conference held last February 8 and 9, 2003 at the Roosevelt Hotel in mid-Manhattan, New York City.

They are publisher Ani Rosa Almario, author and bookseller Carla Pacis, and illustrator and Regional Advisor Beaulah Pedregosa Taguiwalo.

Ani is on a Fulbright scholarship in the U.S. so she simply flew in from California where she is pursuing her graduate studies in Education at Stanford University. Carla arrived as early as February 1 with a month-long itinerary of business, professional, and family matters to attend to. Beaulah arrived on February 5, just one day before the two-day snowstorm that descended on New York City and the surrounding northeastern parts of the country.

During the conference, they were joined by another Filipina, visual artist and illustrator Maria Madonna Davidoff - Carla's former schoolmate at Maryknoll and now also fellow SCBWI member from New Jersey.

Beaulah and Ani were especially delighted to meet Igor Aleksich, the Regional Advisor for Serbia and Montenegro who is also head of the former Yugoslavia Board on Books for Young People. Aside from being SCBWI members, Beaulah and Ani are Chairman and former Secretary General respectively of the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY).
