Human Rights Violations in Saudi Arabia

To: President of the United States of America, Mr. Bill Clinton.

Dear Mr. President:

We are appealing to you to demand from King Fahad of Saudi Arabia, the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Safar Al-Hawaly, 37, and Mr. Saiman Al-Qudah, 39, and their supporters, all over the country. King Fahad has recently mounted a barbaric and outrageous campaign of terror and Human Rights violations against all visionaries, who are demanding reforms in an archaic and medieval police state.

On Tuesday, September 13, 1994, the Saudi authorities brought tanks, machine guns, and troops to the Qassim province to arrest Mr. Al-Qudah, a lecturer. Later that week in the western region of the country, the government arrested and jailed Dr. Al-Hawaly. These arrests were followed by the imprisonment of hundreds of supporters of change in our country. Their crime? Speaking out critically against the regime. The condition of the people of Saudi Arabia is deteriorating rapidly. Except for the few elite rich, the large masses of the kingdom suffer from huge political, economic, and social problems. Serious degradation of basic Human Rights, is eroding the life of the average Saudi Citizen. We are asking you Mr. President, the U.S. Government, and the people in the United States, to condemn, deplore and stop the Saudi regime's campaign of terrorism that is aimed at the balanced and educated group of social reformists in Saudi Arabia. As leaders of the 'Free World, we implore you to support Human Rights in Saudi Arabia, just as you do in Haiti or China. Meanwhile we hold King Fahad and his regime responsible for safety of all innocent people and scholars who have been imprisoned unjustly in Saudi Arabia.

Urgently submitted by the Saudi Students in North America.
