The Archangel Uriel is found almost exclusively in
noncanonical lore. The Catholics recognize
him as St. Uriel. Various sources
identify him as, the angel who watches over thunder and terror, the dark
angel who wrestled with Jacob at Peniel, the destroyer of the hosts of
Sennacherib, the angel sent to Noah to reveal to him the impending flood. It is said that he presides over the
gates of Hell. He is known as the
archangel of salvation. His name
means “fire of God”.
