Urban Legend
USA, 1998
[Jamie Blanks]
Alicia Witt, Jared Leto, Rebecca Gayheart, Tara Reid, Joshua Jackson
Horror / Thriller
A typical American teen-thriller, set in the scary place that is a college. Does the myth of the urban legend really exist or it it just that, a myth? Suddenly it seems that the laughable book of horrific and brutal murders is beginning to come true all of a sudden. Why we don't know, but what we do know is that it has something to do with Natalie Simon's (Alicia Witt in a hardly strenuous role) arrival at said college. Is someone targeting her as part of a prank or is there something more sinister going on?

Urban Legend stars Pacey (Jackson) from
Dawson's Creek but unfortunately he only makes his trademark small appearance (think Cruel Intentions or Muppets From Space) and becomes the first to die in a seemingly 'urban legend' style.

In a similar vein to
Scream the killer has an unknown identity and is recognised only by their hooded, brown, parker jacket (aah, those were the days). The trouble is that just about everyone either owns one or, more peculiarly, wants one making it difficult for the increasingly desperate Ms Simon to trust anyone other than those closest to her, including a youngish Jared Leto (Fight Club).

Urban Legend is another film which is difficult to review as not to give away any of the surprises, for reasons similar to Scream 3, and to do the film justice I will refrain from praising and/or condemning further. Just remember, "If this is an urban legend, what's the twist?".
