The Climate of Toyooka

Speaking of typhoons and natural disasters, Japan is prone to earthquakes.  As you probably already know, the Great Hanshin Earthquake levelled the Hanshin area (Kobe and vicinity) in 1995.  That earthquake was felt even all the way here in Toyooka.  Since I've been here, there have been many earthquakes, mostly small and with basically no damage.  Last year there was a relatively large earthquake centered in Tottori prefecture (west of Tajima) that shook Minato JHS enough to rattle the windows and  shake the desks and light fixtures.

Of course, I wouldn't worry about it too much; just keep in mind that it could happen, and remember not to panic!  If an earthquake does strike, people here are taught to get under the desk or table and wait until it passes.  Doorways are also said to be fairly safe.  If you're at home when it hits, turn off the gas immediately.  It's also wise to keep an earthquake/typhoon kit handy, just in case utilities are cut off.  Other than that, there's not much more to say about this subject ...

This area isn't prone to tornadoes or anything; I just liked the graphic!
