Kumihama

*  Kumihama is home to one of my favorite beaches in the region (Hakoishi Beach).  Located in Kyoto Prefecture directly east of Toyooka, Kumihama is just 15 minutes away by car.  [See the map of Tajima]  The open sea, as well as a large, enclosed bay, make Kumihama an excellent spot for water activities such as jetskiing, boating, fishing, and surfing.
*  Hakoishi Beach (Hakoishi hama), about 25 or 30 minutes away from the apartment, is a long stretch of white sandy beach, perfect for camping and bonfires.  However, much of the beach is quite littered, so you'd probably have to get a group together to clean up the area at which you want to sunbathe or camp out.

*  Every August, a group of Japanese friends and I (and only a couple other JETs) have a big beach camp/barbecue gathering.  It's a lot of fun, and it includes fun stuff like jetskiing, a beach volleyball tournament, fireworks, bonfire, diving for shellfish, and of course, splashing around in the water.

*  Kumihama is also home to Kabutoyama Park, a camp grounds on a hill with a really nice view of the water.  I recommend checking it out too!
