In order to fully understand the world of Creatures, and its four species, you must first understand a little about the history of Creatures. You can get a more developed history here. I am only going to tell you the history briefly because I know you're probably anxious to start playing.

Suffice to say, the world of Creatures was once populated by one species: the Shee. The Shee are a very intelligent species, and they love to create and tinker with machines. So they soon starting playing with DNA, and the creation of what they hoped would be helping creatures. All told, they made three other species: Grendels (which were a mistake) Ettins (designed to be the ultimate builders) and Norns, (cute creatures that were nice and sociable). And there is your
brief history of the four species.
Below are the four species, and a summary of each. You will most likely encounter all three of the Shee's creations before the Shee themselves (since Shee are not actually in the game and must be downloaded seperately).

Small Note: In the Docking Station, only Norns are available to play. Most people prefer Norns, and do not appreciate Grendels coming through their portals. Because Norns are the most widely played, all my Basic Tutorials for Creature Care are based on Norns, but can be applied to all three species.
Ettins are strange, if not cute little creatures that wander the world of Creatures 3. They were made to be workers and cleaners by the Shee, but I think the Shee overdid the instincts, as Ettins collect every gadget within eye sight. And when they can't see any, they'll scour the ship for more.

Because of this, it can be extremely irritating creating machines, only to have Ettins cart away the parts. Ettins are harmless to your Norns, which is more than Grendels can say.
Grendels are vicious creatures that hunt down Norns and Ettins by the sense of their smell and sight. If they get the chance, Grendels will steal your Norns eggs, and even kill them!

Because they live in the jungle, Grendels often carry diseases, which they spread to any other creature they touch.
Keep your Norns away from the Grendels! Even if you train them to be nice, the training rarely lasts! There are different breeds of Grendels, some of which are meaner, and some nicer.
Norns are soft, cuddly fun-loving creatures that inhabit the world of C3. They're friendly and sociable, and very, very curious. Norns are the creature that most people raise - and it's no wonder! They come in a multitude of colors, shapes and sizes! There are many, many different breeds of Norns, so you never know what kind you might meet up with next!

You will learn a lot about Norns in the upcoming pages!

There are many, many Norns breeds. The pictures to the left are just a few of them. The blue one is an Astro Norn, the stiped one is a Bengal, and the bottom one is a Bruin Norn. Each Norn breed has different characteristics.
Very, very little is known about the elusive Shee. We know they were ingenious thinkers, able to create strands of DNA and use their machines to create living creatures. We also know they're a little absent minded, and tend not to think things through. If you want to know more about this lost species, visit here for more information.
Now that we've run through the basic species in Creatures 3, let's move onto the actual inner workings of the Docking Station. Or click here to go back to my Tutorial Page.
