C. Dean "Shorty" Yarnell, 77, of Keosauqua, Iowa, died at 3:35 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua. Born Feb. 7, 1925, near Douds, Iowa, he was the son of Wilber and Velma Nason Yarnell. He married Gail A. Gove on Feb. 24, 1952, in Farmington. She died March 24, 1999. Mr. Yarnell lived in Douds and Pittsburg and for many years in Keosauqua. He was a graduate of Keosauqua High School. He worked at Sheaffer Pen Co. in Fort Madison, Aylor's service station in Keosauqua and for many years at Williams Home Furnishings in Keosauqua. He served for many years as a Keosauqua volunteer fireman and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Survivors include one cousin, Carolyn Bentzinger of Keosauqua, and an uncle, Clair Yarnell of Argentina. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 and from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Ellis Andrews officiating. Burial will be in Leando Cemetery in Douds. A memorial has been established for the activity fund at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center.
