Note: In the interest of saving space, Hinshaw used abbreviations throughout his Encyclopedia, such as "dis" - disowned, or "rocf" - received on certificate from. Rather than make the researcher remember these abbreviations, I have typed out the wordings in each entry. Dates are listed with numbers for months, as was and is the practice among members of the Society of Friends; so in the date format shown here, the second number is that of the month. Also, the Gregorian calendar began to be in general use in English-speaking lands in 1753. Dates shown here before that year are followed by "o.s." - meaning Old Style calendar, as a reminder that there should be an adjustment made for the Julian Calendar.
