Nathan Yarnall, Book Two, Chapter Six

Corrections & Additions to
"A Partial Genealogy of the Name Yarnall-Yarnell 1683-1970"
Page 393 - Nathan’s widow, Phoebe Schofield, wed. 5m 23d 1781 Micajah
Speakman @ Concord MM.

Joshua Sharpless, who m. Edith3 Yarnall, was son of Benjamin Sharpless of Middletown.

Nathan’s second wife, Hannah Mendenhall, d. in 1760, which makes the birth date for
their son Robert of 4m 5d 1761 as given in HHY suspect.

Eli, their son, married Priscilla Walker; she d. 6m 9d 1795.

Also on page 393, we have Ephraim, son of Nathan and Rachel (Jackson),
shown as marrying 6-3-1758 his first cousin, Dorothy Yarnall. That marriage
is in "Record of Pennsylvania Marriages Prior to 1810", Vol. I, p. 284, published
Harrisburg PA, 1880 by Lane S. Hart, State Printer.
HHY gives this couple a son, Philip, with an “about” birth
date of 1759/60 and marriage to ? in 1780(?).

First, as to a presumed child of Ephraim and Dorothy
Yarnall) Yarnall. David, 3rd child of Philip, Jr. and Hannah
Swayne, petitioned Orphan’s Court of Chester County, Pa.,
20 Sept. 1769 concerning distribution of his father’s
estate. In that petition David states that his sister
Dorothy, wife of Ephraim, died without issue.
[RY Note: But see will of Dorothy's brother Philip, who names
two Children for Dorothy in his will - David & Jane. ]

I strongly suspect Philip, son of David & Hannah, is the one whose descendants
appear in Wayne Co., Ohio.

Herewith data on other children of David3 and Hannah (Swayne)
Yarnall, which I think supports the notion that we are dealing
with children of David and Hannah in Wayne Co., Ohio, and not
children of a child and grandchildren of Ephraim and Dorothy.

Hannah Swayne is daughter of Edward Swayne of Marlborough, per Gilbert
Cope's extracts from Kennett Monthly Meeting.

- 1785-2-11, Sarah Yarnall, Jr. - attendiing a marriage out of unity.
(A note here - in the 1700’s use “Jr.” after a given name often
meant “younger”, rather than daughter or son of someone with the
same given name.)
- 1785-5-6, Sarah Yarnall, Jr. also marriiage by a magistrate
- 1785-6-10, Sarah disowned

Page 394 - Notes on children of Benjamin3 and Elizabeth (Falwell) Yarnall:
I believe that Stephen, given as the eldest child of this couple, is the Stephen
Yarnell of Harford Co., MD, whose wife was probably a Mary. More research
needed, beyond census records 1800 through 1840, which I have.

It is possible that the Jonathan of 1830 census, Morgan Co., OH is
the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth. Needs more research.

Notes on child of John and Elizabeth (Newlin) Yarnall:
Goshen MM records give a death date for Rachael (Yarnall) Battman of “1822-12”.

Notes on a child of Samuel and Hannah (Holton/Houlton) Yarnall:
Mary R. Morgan, who m. Ellis, was a daughter of John & Rebecca Morgan of Edgmont.

Notes on children of Eli and Priscilla (Walker) Yarnall:
Walker m. at Middletown MM 1m 29d 1807 Elizabeth Yarnall, dau. of William & Sarah.
Walker and Elizabeth appear in the 1850 census aged 68 & 65, respectively. Living
with them are Ann Haley,40, and Elizabeth Conner, 52.
Spouses Meredith Pennell (who m. Sarah4) and Alice Pennell (who m.
Eli, Jr.4) were children of Joseph and Sarah Pennell of Aston.

Ruth, wife of Philip Yarnell, d. July 20, 1831, age 42. Preceding data
found on p. 673 and
following pages for burials in Maize Cemetery, Wooster Twp., Wayne
Co., OH.
This matches the data given for Ruth Etricon by HHY, and is confirmed
in the 1975
publication.
Census records of Wooster Township for Philip and his family are
to be found in 1820, p. 149,
and 1830, p. 101 Philip’s there in 1840, but there is no female in
his age bracket as was
the case in the prior records. Philip doesn’t appear in the 1850
census for Wooster as
head of family, probably indicating either that he moved elsewhere or
died between 1840
and 1850. There are additional Philips in Ohio prior to and after
1850.
I have several handwritten notes here; the first two for girls.
“Lydia, m. 23 April 1829, Aaron
Thompson.” “Hannah, m. Stephen Jones 20 March 1826 - page 90, Vol.2,
Wayne Co.
Marriage Records. A further note states “See page 371 - some of these
children are
probably children of David4, David3, Philip2, Philip1.

records as noted.
According to the above record, Houlton4 who married Ann Buffington had
11 children, rather
than the 10 HHY lists. The 9th child is Houlton, the 10th, Clayton,
and the 11th, Jonathan V.
According to 1800, 1810, and 1820 censuses, this family lived in Mill
Creek Hundred, New
Castle Co., Delaware. In 1850, Ann (Buffington) Yarnall/Yarnold was
living with Jacob and
Edith “Folk” (note that HHY uses spelling “Foulke”). Edith, age 48,
was daughter of Houlton
and Ann. Also in this household is one Sarah Brackin, age 13,
presumably a daughter of
Edith’s older sister, Susan, who m. a Mr Bracken.

Notes on children of Ellis4 - child 2 is John Morgan. Child 4, William
P., married Mary H.
Heacock, daughter of Jonathan and Rebecca Heacock. They were married
at her father’s house.
Jonathan H. was son of William and Ruthanna. deceased, and of
Newgarden. Mary H. was of
Concord MM, where the marriage is recorded.
Page 398 - David, shown here as son of Job& Mary (Maize) Yarnall, is a
son of Daniel (b. 1767) and
Mary Elizabeth (Calhoun) Yarnell, and born 19 March 1816 Uniontown,
Fayette Co., PA.
David’s second wife was Laura Henderson, and there were no ch. by this
2nd marriage.

Phillip Yarnell and Tamer Whitney 31 March 1840. Wooster April 1,
1840. W. Spencer.
Samuel Yarnell’s m. to Mary Elizabeth May 3/5/1835 is confirmed by
Wayne Co. mrg bk.
David Yarnell’s m. to Elizabeth Beall was 11-27-1834, not 11-21, as
shown in HHY,
again, according to Wayne Co. mrg. bk.

Page 399 -
Daniel, who m. Barbara Funk, is not necessarily a child of a Philip
Yarnall - the marriage
record calls him Daniel 2nd; therefore probably son of a Daniel, not
of a Philip.
His line could be Philip1, Philip2, Daniel3, Daniel4, Daniel5.
Philip, who m. Sarah Neidigh, did so Nov. 9, 1843, according to Wayne
Co. mrg. recds.

Page 399 - Green Yarnall did not have a child Jacob. According to
tombstone records of Blachleysville Cemetery, Plain Twp., Wayne Co., OH, his children
were Reuben, Job and Elizabeth. The data given here for Jacob is NOT CORRECT.
[ RY note: cem. records show only three of possibly eight children ]

Page 403 - JACOB5 YARNALL (spelling of surname varies from census to
census), son of George4 and Sarah (Newburn) Yarnall [Yarnall line is Jacob5,
George4, George3, Amos2, Francis1], m. (1) Elizabeth Ashmore (from whom my
children descend) and (2) Margaret Hunter. Jacob d. March 1889 Red Willow
Co., Nebraska. He had 9 children 2 by Elizabeth and 7 by Margaret.
