Amos Yarnall, Book One, Chapter Seven

Corrections & Additions to
"A Partial Genealogy of the Name Yarnall-Yarnell 1683-1970"
Page 218 - Amos, seventh child of Hannah (Baker) and Francis Yarnall,
did not have a son, David as shown here. I quote sources as follows:
DAVID3 [son Moses and Dowse (Davis) Yarnall) 1700’s - PA
m. Sarah Moore of Radnor, widow of Thomas, Jr. 10-11-1752 @
Newtown Meeting.
ch: Priscilla, who m. Francis Townsend b. 17 Nov. 1764, d. 16 Dec. 1816.
(David (and Sarah, dec.) called of Coventry when Priscilla marries)

NOTE: GOSHEN MM MARRIAGE INDEX SHOWS DAVID3 AS
SON OF AMOS, BUT MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE IS SIGNED
FIRST BY MOSES AND DOWSE WHICH WOULD INDICATE THEY
ARE THE PARENTS OF THE GROOM. IN MISC. MM RECORDS,
THE MARRIAGE INDICATES AMOS.
THIS WOULD APPEAR TO BE INCORRECT, AS AMOS DID NOT
HAVE A SON, DAVID. ALL SOURCES I’VE CONSULTED GIVE
AMOS ONLY FIVE CHILDREN, NOT SIX.

These sources include the John K. Yarnell monograph, found at Newberry
Library in Chicago (which has interesting data on the Townsend line), as well as
Goshen MM records from Coll. Gen. Soc. of Pa. See also page 154 of H. H.
Yarnell’s genealogy, where the entry for David and Sarah is shown with
correct parents.

Page 218 - Amos’s first wife was Mary Ashbridge, not Molin, as printed.
She was born 11m 1710 O.S. [10 Jan 1711], the daughter of George and
Mary (Malin) Ashbridge of Goshen; d. 1745 and was buried 20 Jan. 1745/6.
All children were born on the original grant in Willistown twp. In 1913,
descendants still occupied the land. The original grant of 500 acres was in the
lower part of Twp. of Willistown.
Warrant was issued to Amos August 1, 1737. He was an active member
of the Society of Friends, a member of Goshen Monthly meeting, and appointed
Elder on 19 April 1756.

Further corrections to Chapter VII - AMOS, starting with page 218:

GEORGE3, fifth (not sixth) child of Amos and Mary is shown born
11-12-1745, and on page 3, his mother, Mary (Ashbridge) is given a death
date of 1-20-1745. This is an example of the types of date errors in that have
crept into this genealogy. One date is O.S., one is N.S., which makes it
appear the mother died before the child was born. In actuality, George was
born, according to current reckoning, on 12 January 1746, and his mother,
Mary, died 20 January 1746. The two dates actually should be written
12 January 1745/46 and 20 January 1745/46. Further, his wife’s maiden
name, as written in Quaker records, was Ashton, not Ashtone.

MARY3, third (not fourth) child of Amos and Mary -- Her husband, Josiah
Garratt/Garrett, was the son of Samuel & Sarah. Josiah was b. 1733-1-25
and died about 1794. Source: Goshen MM records, Coll. Gen. Soc. PA. The
dates for both Josiah and Mary are probably old style. The marriage date
(11-29-1753) should be new style. They were married @ Goshen MM.

JOSEPH4, first child of Daniel and Ann (James) Y: Birth date should
be written 11-22-1748/9. In Goshen MM records, found in Miscellaneous MM
Records, Coll. Gen. Soc. of Pa., the date is written “1748/9-11-22”.

AARON4, tenth child of Daniel and Ann (James) Yarnall. There is
considerable confusion about Aarons in the last half of 18th and first half of
19th century. This Aaron is presumed to be the Aaron who died 1787,
Willistown, Chester Co., Pa., intestate (not in 1789). This may or may not
be accurate.

Page 219 - Phoebe, first child of Amos3 and Jane (Hibberd) m. Samuel M.
Farquhar. He was son of William and Anne of Pipe Creek MM. They had a son,
Caleb Farquhar.
- Jesse, eighth child of Amos3 and Jane,, m. second Asenath [not Asenaph]
Conard 12-1-1836 not 12-15. She was the daughter of Dennis and
Diadamia Conard. Marriage was at New Garden MM and is found in the Hicksite
records thereof.

Page 220 - Lydia Ashton, wife of George3, was the daughter of Isaac and
Dorothy (Carr) Ashton of Maxfield, Bucks Co., PA The family went on
certificate from Goshen MM to Pipe Creek MM; thence to Gunpowder MM,
and eventually to Redstone MM and then to Short Creek MM; i.e., Chester
Co., PA to either York Co., PA and/or NE Maryland to Fayette Co., PA
and finally to Jefferson/Harrison Co., Ohio (Older children may not be in order of birth.)
- Sarah m. ? Merriman
- Thomas m. before moving to Fayette Co.. No record yet found.
- Susanna m. ? Hill
- George
- Mary
- Aaron
- Amos
- Eli
- Mordecai

page 222 - Eli Yarnall is shown to have "married Sarah Whitlock in 1809". Their only child listed, Alice, is shown to have wed Robert Frazier in 1818. Since she was only eight or nine years old in 1818, that data is wrong. In truth, the Alice Yarnall that wed Robert Frazier was the widow of Eli Yarnall, Jr. Eli Yarnall Jr. was the son of Eli & Priscilla (Walker) Yarnall. See the data for his marriage on page 394 of HHY. Alice's maiden name was Pennell. This data from Gilbert Cope, The Sharpless Family, Philadelphia, PA, 1887.
