Samuel Yarnell of Centre County, Pennsylvania
Research Notes contributed by Mary Card Yarnell

The progenitor of the Centre Co., Pennsylvania Yarnells is one Samuel Yarnell, who arrives in Centre County before 1800, as he appears in Centre County census for 1800.

As to this SAMUEL being a son of Abraham and Elizabeth (James) Yarnall, the answer is NO. One Col. Ira Franklin Fravel once upon a time hired a professional researcher for work on Yarnall/Yarnell in Centre County. That researcher mistakenly made the Samuel whom the Colonel was interested in a son of Abraham and Elizabeth. Herewith what data I have researched on that couple.

First, the death date for Abraham given in HHY is clearly a typographical error. According to Gilbert Cope's records drawn from Kenneth Monthly Meeting, Abraham3 (of Philip2 Philip1) died in 1767, not 1761. His wife, Elizabeth James, was the daughter of Samuel James. Abraham and Elizabeth's son, Samuel, was born 6-20-1764 (per Newark MM records found in Chester Co. Historical Society Quaker records). The son Samuel wed Sarah Lamb, daughter of Pierce and Rachel Lamb of Kent County MD, on 1/10/1788 at Cecil Meeting House, Cecil Co. MD. Samuel & Sarah (Lamb) Yarnall had seven daughters, four of whom died in early childhood. They had no sons. This Samuel Yarnall died 5th, 9th month, 1807 in Cecil County, Maryland.

See the following for data concerning the Samuel who is the son of Daniel & Ann (James) Yarnall.

Research by Mary Card Yarnell on Samuel and Sarah Yarnall

(See page 219 and following in HHY Partial Genealogy)

Daniel3, Child of Amos2 and Mary Malin (Ashbridge) Yarnall, as found in Goshen MM marriage records and Miscellaneous MM records Chester Co., Goshen section:

Daniel3 b. 1727/8 12-15,
wed: Ann James, daughter of Joseph of Willistown, 10-10-1747 at Goshen Meeting.
    Their children were:
  1. Joseph, b. 1748/9-11-22 (Jan. 22, 1749)
  2. Mary, b. 1750-3-27
  3. Elizabeth, b. 1751-8-6
  4. Sarah, b. 1753-6-7
  5. Amos, b. 1754-11-19
  6. Lydia, b. 1756-5-19
  7. Jonathan, b. 1757-11-13, d. 1759-3-19
  8. Ann, b. 1759-2-21
  9. Susanna, b. 1761-1-7
  10. Aaron, b. 1762-8-23 [in another hand -- ?m. Lydia Regester?*]
  11. Rebecca, b. 1764/3/23
  12. Samuel, b. 1765-10-19
  13. James, b. 1769-4-6

Believe last four children were disowned by Goshen; Aaron, Rebecca, and Samuel on same date; James at a later date.

In order:

Aaron, b. 1762-8-23 (Coll. Gen. Soc. Pa. Misc. MM Records, Chester Co. - Goshen MM [the only Lydia Regester I located was Lydia Regester, daughter of David & Catharine, b. 1787-8-7, which is evidently a later Lydia, since this one is 25 years younger than this Aaron4.]

Rebecca, b. 1764-3-23 (Coll. Gen. Soc. Pa., Misc. MM Records, Chester Co., Goshen MM: Also from this source the following: 1785-(4)-8 - Rebeckah Yarnall now Edwards fornication before marriage 1785-6-10 - Rebecca Edwards disowned [at same time as Sarah, Aaron, and Samuel ]

Samuel, b. 1765-10-19 [Coll. Gen. Soc. Pa - Misc. MM Records Chester Co. -Goshen MM]

James, b. 1769-4-6 [Coll. Gen. Soc. Pa. - Misc. MM Records Chester Co., Goshen MM. [He could well be the James who removed without certificate and refused friends advice therein [Goshen MM] and was subsequently disowned 1798-6-8. This is not proven yet.]

I am convinced that Samuel and Sarah moved westward from Chester County, first to Fayette Co. PA and then on to Ohio. HHY shows Sarahs death date as 11-3-1836, which is that of a Sarah (whom I believe is not the wife of Samuel) who died in her 72nd year This entry in Misc. Monthly Meeting Records of Chester Co. does not state whether she was married, widowed, or unmarried. Samuels Sarah died in Wayne Co., Ohio. That record found in Wayne Co., Ohio Burial Records, in Genealogy Section of the Wayne Co. Historical Soc. 1975:

Maize Cemetery, p. 673 ff. Wooster Twp.
Sarah Yarnell, d. Aug. 13, 1836 age 73.

My original research notes contain the following questions concerning her:
Is she the wife of Philip, (the father of the Samuel who m. Elizabeth May?) Daniel May, father of Elizabeth, buried this cemetery - d. Sept. 3, 1837.

From placement of above notes in the records, she could well be the Sarah who m. Samuel Y. Calling her Sarah, Jr. could mean that her mother was Sarah, but equally well could mean Sarah, the younger, in Goshen MM and have no relationship to her mother's name. The only data I have on a David Yarnall w/ wife Hannah is the following reference: David Yarnall of Kennett son of Phillip m. Hannah Swayne 1758-1-12 Londongrove This is from Collections of Gen. Soc. Pa., Misc. MM Records Chester Co. - Newgarden MM Records.

My research notes -- Is this David3, son Philip2 and Dorothy? More probable, David3 son Phillip2 and Mary (Hoopes) Yarnall, b. 1725. See page 371 of HHY - among my many notes there is one stating Sarah (who m. Samuel Y., per the genealogy) together with brothers Philip and David, probably moved westward to Wayne Co., Ohio.
