Sanctuary (1998)

Cast:Mark Dacascos, Jamiz Woolvet

A priest played unconvincingly by Dacascos must resort to his old ass-kicking ways when the CIA finds out his location and sends a group of assassins after him, of course this is told in flashback by Dacascos to a religious sect which is the movie's main problem.

Aside from making a gigantic error in casting, Mark Dacascos does give it his best shot, the problem is, is that Dacascos is too boyish and young to convince as a religious figure, as an assassin with excellent martial arts ability, Dacascos is believable but it's this plot angle which ruins the movie. The movie itself is unexpectedly dreary and melodramatic, not giving Dacascos enough oppurtunity to kick some life back into the movie. Certainly Dacascos has screen presence and some acting ability but half of the time the script doesn't give him enough room to act.
Sanctuary is a ridiculous conspiracy thriller with all the usual doublecrosses and ulterior motives but not an ounce of excitement, this hurts the movie because it becomes often dull in it's overwrought excess..  A few production values are good and ironically the ending sets up a twist that would've been a better direction to go from square one.  However after this and Dolph Lundgren's turn in The Minion, let it be said that you should never cast actionstars as priests. Ever. D.Tibor Ticacks **
