| The Rock (1996) Cast:Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, Ed Harris, Michael Biehn,William Forsythe Nic Cage plays a scientist who sneaks into a prison to disarm a nerve gas, with the help of Sean Connery who provides his expertise to break in the prison in this overrated, bloated and ultimately rotten actioner which shows exactly what's wrong with today's actioners. This literly has no substance to it. This was nothing more but a derivative of Die Hard, with the big novel touch being that they're breaking into a prison but everyone treats it so seriously that it just becomes a chore to sit through it. Naturally this movie has no real merit, infact the worst part is Connery's escape attempt which shoehorns a lame actionscene for the purpose of just providing explosions to make the bored audience pay attention. Yet the movie has no real suspense because the villain played by Harris is disappointingly weak and wussified, what happened to the bad guys who took over a prison and could kill someone with a smile on his face. Movies like this need villains who create tension but without one the movie just becomes a melodramatic Die Hard rip off with numerous attempts at disarming procedures. The acting is okay and the production values are pretty good but the movie is unexciting, tired and worst of all very dull. D.Michael Bay* |
