| Point Blank (1998) Cast:Mickey Rourke, Danny Trejo,Kevin Gage,Nina Sevelle,Frederic,Forrest Point Blank is Mickey Rourke's stab at Die Hard territory, of course the rumor is that Rourke was indeed offered the role as John McClane from that action classic, unfortuantely for reasons unknown he decided against it , and although his work looked promising in that particular decade after Johnny Handsome hit in late 1989 the truth was Rourke's star was not shining anymore, after such duds as Wild Orchid, Harley Davidson and The Marlboro Man and Exit In Red, Rourke was relegated to lame erotic thrillers. (Including a 9 1/2 Weels sequel). Overall his straight to video stuff was all junk. One exception was Fall Time which I found enjoyable and much better then other heist flicks. Rourke however has mounted somewhat of a comeback with the likes of Double Team, Animal Factory and Get Carter (All movies getting theatrical releases.) Point Blank can be seen as part of the comeback. It was a popular release and for the most part and competently made. If one wants to see a movie which action is delivered no matter how stupid, Point Blank is your cup of tea. Mainly though it's a standard action thriller which has enough action and a few unitentional laughs to make this one watchable, unfortunately it's somewhat of a disappointment. Rourke seems bored with the whole movie and the top drawer B.movie cast is wasted, but as a professional action flick, it's okay. Point Blank is a movie that remains foremost to most of Rourke's weak straight to video flicks, but seriously inferior to his classics of the 80's. D.Matt Earl Beesley **1/2 |
