Obesity is a growing global epidemic increasing at an alarming rate. 1 out of every 5 children is overweight (Covington et al, 2001) in the United States. During the past three decades, the number of overweight children in the U.S. has more than doubled (Rocchini, 2002). Kolezko et al. (2002) mentioned that, up to two thirds of obese children become obese adults (p. S208). Diagnosing obesity is traditionally done by having a >95th percentile with the Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI is the relationship between weight and height. It needs to be catered to each individual because the individual who is lean and muscular can have the same BMI as an individual who is overweight or obese. Current recommendations are to use the BMI as the primary screening tool for obesity (Segal et al., 2001). Other tests that can be performed to diagnose obesity are by calculating the body mass with anthropometrics that determines skinfold thickness values, and bioelectrical impedance or dual energy X-ray scans (Koletzko et al., 2002).
