Types of Breast Milk
Breast milk is highly specialized and suited for the growth of an infant. Breast milk contains proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals that are not found in formala.
Three types of milk are produced during the establishment of milk production: colostrum, transitional milk, and mature milk.
Colostrum
- Colostrum is the first milk that is produced.
- Colostrum is present in the breast by the second trimester.
- Colostrum is yellowish in color.
- Colostrum contains fat, water and water-soluble vitamins (E,A,K) and minerals, such as sodium and zinc
Transitional Milk
- Transitional milk is produced from the end of colostrum production until approximately two weeks postpartum.
- Transitional milk contains elevated levels of fat, water-soluble vitamins, and more calories than colostrum.
Mature Milk
- Mature milk is the final milk produced and has a high percentage of water.
Breast milk changes during a feeding, when a baby first feeds from the breast.
The infant is getting what is known as the foremilk.
A two to three times higher fat content is present at the end of a feeding which is known as the hindmilk.
This is due to the triggering of the milk ejection reflex several times in the course of a feed and it is one of the reasons why time limits on breastfeeding are discouraged.
