Alcoholism is a chronic illness.
It has a slow and insidious onset.
It can occurr at any age.
It affects the meso-limbic system of
the central nervous system. There are many risk factors for alcoholism, but the strongest appears to be genetic. The most common medical conditons associated with alcoholism are; alcoholic gastritis, cirrhosis of the liver, peripheral neuropathies, and cardiac problems.
Alcoholism also causes depression and anxiety disorders. There is no cure for alcoholism, but recovery from the disease is possible. We need to educate our adolescents and those who work with them to identify risk factors.
