It is vital for successful breastfeeding that healthcare professionals be knowledgeable about the development of adolescents and well trained in communications skills. Promoting the maternal role and effective parenting skills with the young mothers and their family are the beginning steps to successful breastfeeding.

According to David Yeung�s (1993) research, breastfeeding drops to 21% after discharge from the hospital. This figure is significant knowing that only 39% of teenagers initiate breastfeeding. With the shorter stays in the hospitals after delivery, it is now even more imperative that healthcare providers be educated in the process and practice of breastfeeding. Following are vital steps in promoting breastfeeding:
