Liber XXXVI

THE STAR SAPPHIRE

(Seal of A.'.A.'.)

A∴A∴
Publication in Class D

Let the Adept be armed with his Magick Rood (and provided with his Mystic Rose).

In the centre, let him give the L.V.X. signs; or if he know them, if he will and dare do them, and can keep silent about them, the signs of N.O.X., being the signs of Puer, Vir, Puella, Mulier. Omit the sign I.R.1

Then let him advance to the East and make the Holy Hexagram,2 saying:
PATER ET MATER UNUS DEUS ARARITA.3

Let him go round to the South, make the Holy Hexagram, and say:
MATER ET FILIUS UNUS DEUS ARARITA.4

Let him go round to the West, make the Holy Hexagram, and say:
FILIUS ET FILIA UNUS DEUS ARARITA.5

Let him go round to the North, make the Holy Hexagram, and say:
FILIA ET PATER UNUS DEUS ARARITA.6

Let him then return to the Centre, and so to the Centre of All (making the ROSY CROSS7 as he may know how), saying
ARARITA ARARITA ARARITA.8

(In this the Signs shall be those of Set Triumphant and of Baphomet.9 Also shall Set appear in the Circle. Let him drink of the Sacrament and let him communicate the same.)

Then let him say:
OMNIA IN DUOS: DUO IN UNUM: UNUS IN NIHIL:
HAEC NEC QUATOR
NEC OMNIA
NEC DUO
NEC UNUS
NEC NIHIL SUNT10

GLORIA PATRI ET MATRI
ET FILIO ET FILIAE
ET SPIRITUI SANCTO EXTERNO
ET SPIRITUI SANCTO INTERNO
UT ERAT EST ERIT
IN SAECULA SAECULORUM
SEX IN UNO
PER NOMEN SEPTEM IN UNO ARARITA11

Let him then repeat the signs of L.V.X. but not the signs of N.O.X.: for it is not he that shall arise in the sign of Isis Rejoicing.

The Double Gift of Tongues

Notes and translations

1: For the Signs of LVX and NOX see the appendices to Magick in Theory and Practice, particularly Liber O and Liber V vel Reguli.  "the sign I.R." is Isis Rejoicing or Mater Triumphans, the final N.O.X. sign.

2: The "Holy Hexagram" is further discussed in Ch. 69 of The Book of Lies, which I append:

69
Kephalé [Xi Theta]

The Way to Succeed – and the Way to Suck Eggs!

This is the Holy Hexagram.

Plunge from the height, O God, and interlock with Man!

Plunge from the height, O Man, and interlock with Beast!

The Red Triangle is the desceding tongue of grace; the Blue Triangle is the ascending tongue of prayer.

This Interchange, the Double Gift of Tongues, the Word of Double Power—ABRAHADABRA!—is the sign of the GREAT WORK, for the GREAT WORK is accomplished in Silence. And behold is not that Word equal to Cheth, that is Cancer, whose Sigil is <symbol of Cancer>?

This Work also eats up itself, accomplishes its own end, nourishes the worker, leaves no seed, is perfect in itself.

Little children, love one another!

Commentary ([Xi Theta])

The key to the understanding of this chapter is given in the number and the title, the former being intelligible to all nations who employ Arabic figures, the latter only to experts in deciphering English puns.

The chapter alludes to Levi's drawing of the Hexagram, and is a criticism of, or improvement upon, it.  In the ordinary Hexagram, the Hexagram of nature, the red triangle is upwards, like fire, and the blue triangle downwards, like water.  In the magical hexagram this is reversed; the descending red triangle is that of Horus, a sign specially revealed by him personally, at the Equinox of the Gods.  (It is the flame descending upon the altar, and licking up the burnt offering.)  The blue triangle represents the aspiration, since blue is the colour of devotion, and the triangle, kinetically considered, is the symbol of directed force.

In the first three paragraphs this formation of the hexagram is explained: it is a symbol of the mutual seperation of the Holy Guardian Angel and his client.  In the interlocking is indicated the completion of the work.

Paragraph 4 explains in slightly different language what we have said above, and the scriptural image of tongues is introduced.

In paragraph 5 the symbolism of tongues is further developed. Abrahadabra is our primal example of an interlocked word.  We assume that the reader has thoroughly studied that word in Liber D, etc.  The sigil of Cancer links up this symbolism with the number of this chapter.

The remaining paragraphs conclude the Gallic symbolism.

3: Father and Mother [are] one God ARARITA.

4: Mother and Son [are] one God ARARITA.

5: Son and Daughter [are] one God ARARITA.

6: Daughter and Father [are] one God ARARITA.

7: For the ROSY CROSS see Chapter XII of Magick in Theory and Practice.

8: ARARITA is a Qabalistic Divine Name, a Notariqon (acronym) of Achad Rosh: Acdotho Rosh Ichudo: Temurahzo Achad, Hebrew for "One is his beginning; One his individuality; his permutation One."

9: The Sign of Set Triumphant has been tentatively identified with Isis Rejoicing, the final NOX sign, the sign of Baphomet with Mulier, the fourth NOX sign.

10: All in two; two in one; one in nothing.  These are neither four nor all nor two nor one nor none.

11: Glory to the Father and to the Mother and to the Son and to the Daughter and to the Holy Spirit without and to the Holy Spirit within, that was, is and shall be, [or: which was, and is, and is to come] for ever and ever [lit. to generations of generations], six in one by the name seven in one ARARITA.
