Why do we bow before and after each kata and before and after working with another student ?  

The bow is a sign of respect, In the Orient, it is a greeting and a goodbye , much like a handshake would be in America or a kiss on the side of the cheek in some European countries. We bow before each kata, first as a sign of respect for the person we are performing in front of, whether it be our Sensei or senior student. Secondly, by bowing you are asking the senior to watch and alerting them to the fact that you are going to perform the kata to the best of your ability. Finishing with a bow is a sign of respect,  Bowing before working with another student: senior, junior or peer, you are telling them that you want to work TOGETHER to help each other understand, not to compete for the sole purpose of helping yourself; again you are showing respect,  

 

What is MUSHIN (moo - shin) ?  

"No Mindedness", clearing your mind of distractions.  

 

What is MIN-CHIN- CHU-RYU ?  

A phrase often used by Kanbun Uechi to describe Pangai-Noon. It means: 'Speed with glare' The idea of moving very fast yet with spirit or glare of strength.    

 

How is a Dojo different from a gym ?  

The dojo is set aside from the Gym because inside a dojo there are a number of rules concerning respect in the dojo: respect for your teacher and fellow students and etiquette which are not present in a gym.
